I don't know about you, but this could be the most positively baffling statement to come from someone who is no doubt paid millions of dollars a year.

Quote
"Let's face it, we're disappointed it did not open bigger," Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer says. "We had a big star in Ice Cube, a fantastic director (Lee Tamahori, director of 2002's Die Another Day). We felt like we had everything going for us. I'm not sure what happened."

Well I'm not sure who the fuck would hire someone as dimwitted as this. Hell, I don't even know what Sony is thinking. They expected the sequel to pull in $25M and it pulled in $13.7M. If you ask me, that's $13,700,000 more than I would have projected.

All I know is that if I want a movie greenlighted about my ASS, I'm going to Rory Bruer.

What a clueless moron.

Since when is Ice Cube a big star? This movie had "hollywood handjob" written all over it.

Oh man, Rory Bruer is awesome. (From CmdrSlacks link):

Quote
"I wish I could say," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for "XXX" studio Sony. "Certainly, we're disappointed, because it's a film we all believed in. We have Ice Cube, who is a big star, and I think he's one of those rare actors who really can do just about anything. So I really don't know."

How the FUCK does he do it? Ice Cube is a rare actor who can do just about anything?

If by anything you mean "angsty short black dude," then fuck yea, he can do anything. I hope they sign him to play Jack Sparrow in the third Pirates, because he's - ya know - one of those rare actors.

Hey guys, we're going to do a sequal, but we can't get the original actors back. I'm sure it will be ok!

Ice Cube is a decent actor, but doesn't seem compelling enough to carry a film- he needs a very good script (Boys N Tha Hood) and/or a scene-stealing co-star (Friday). I even liked him in Higher Learning. Every time he has tried 'action star' instead of 'scary black activist guy' or 'smart ass stoned guy' it has been a disaster (Anaconda, anyone?).

Here are some facts in Sony's defense. The Fast and the Furious, a Vin Diesel/Rob Cohen movie, opened at around $40 million and went on to gross $144 million domestically. The sequel, 2 Fast 2 Furious which was sans Vin Diesel and Rob Cohen opened at around $50 million (!) and went on to gross $127 million. XXX, another Vin Diesel/Rob Cohen movie, opened at $44 million and grossed $142 million. Given the relative success of 2 Fast 2 Furious, it is not hard to understand the reasoning that went on at Sony to greenlight a sequel to XXX since it followed the exact same model as 2 Fast 2 Furious (no Vin Diesel or Rob Cohen but same basic premise).

I blame the lack of titties in XXX2 vrs 2Fast2Furious...

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.

This is a gross (and easily correctable) oversight. At least the crappy action flicks of the 80s had some gratuitous skin (Action Jackson, anyone?).

Give Rory a break, he's in distribution not development. They dump the turds in his lap and he has to polish them.

As a result of a series of events I won't bother to recount, I discovered they are remaking Back to School with Cedric the Entertainer in the Dangerfield role.  I weep for Hollywood.

I was in the local 20 theater cineplex last weekend and I was checking out the coming atractions posters.  Out of 15 or so posters there were maybe 2 that looked like original ideas.  Everything else was a remake.  Um. WTF?

I don't get to the movies much anymore.  I am generally way too busy.  Thats said, there are many more remakes coming out in the near future than ever before. I am used to one or two a summer but seriously, The Longest Yard, The Exorcist, War of the Worlds, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Herbie, Bad News Bears, The Pink Panther?  And then there is TV to movie weirdness, Bewitched, Dukes of Hazard, The Honeymooner and this is just off the top of my head.

There is no fucking way you can tell me this is 'Normal'.  Did everyone in hollywood just run out of ideas all at once?  Is the promise of 100's of millions not enough to inspire some creativity?

I've seen all those things already, show me something new and exciting damnit!

That is not a defense. It just makes them look dumber. Anyone who thinks that making money in the movie business is that simple shouldn't be in the movie business. That thinking ignores about one hundred other variables that I don't want to list since people here already know them.

In what world is Ice Cube a big movie star? I mean, I know Cube but isn't the string of Fridays movies his biggest movie? Anaconda? And the director of a Bond movie? I thought they just produced them from a fungus in some lab.

The movie was doomed to failure. XXX the first one was an OK movie, but without Vin Diesel, what was the point? When you make a "franchise" movie around a star who doesn't want to be in the franchise, you're pretty much doomed to failure.
