This movie is incredible.
I took my girlfriend (who hates kung fu movies) and she loved it. It's hilarious.

I loved Shaolin Soccer and was entertained by God of Cookery, so I expected to like this. In fact, I liked it better than the other Stephen Chow stuff I've seen. His talent at cheeseball comedy is remarkable. Who would've thought you could release a slapstick movie in the U.S. with an R rating and be successful?

What's the "R" rating for? I don't have a problem taking the kids to the PG-13 movies, but "R" I like to find out if it's just for language or nudity so I know if I have to find a sitter or not.

According to the MPAA it is for "sequences of strong stylized action and violence."

One of the most entertaining movies I've seen so far this year.
Can't wait for Chow to make more movies.

Chow made Shaolin Soccer as well and a handful of other movies. Including one that's on netflix called King of Comedy - which is great.
Saw Kung Fu Hustle a few months ago and yes, it is indeed awesome.

Most of the violence is done up like a live-action cartoon. However there are some scenes with (in my opinion) gratuitous blood in them. It probably could have gotten a PG-13 rating if he cut out that stuff. I personally liked Shaolin Soccer better -- the characters were more interesting and the premise was more clever and funny. However I don't really like the "wire-fu" style of martial arts making in general and Chow's recent movies are even more over-the-top than those kinds of movies and are basically live-action versions of the old martial arts comics I used to read while visiting my Aunt in Hong Kong using the virtual actor CG techonology developed in The Matrix and other special effects movies. I prefer my martial arts movie fighting to be more "realistic" a la the Bruce Lee movies.

"Speak Chinese !" .... thats still cracking me up, though the boy with his butt hanging out perplexes me. Great movie , doesnt slow down except a few times when it verges on seriousness but quickly returns to slap-stick-ticity goodness. I went to this movie to laugh and watch kung fu, I was not disapointed.

I'm thinking because of the guy's ass hanging out... maybe cause of the pretty cold blooded murder by the axe gang in the beginning, but otherwise I really can't figure out why this got an R rating. It should've been PG13. Hell, more people died in Star Wars than in this movie. And it's not like it was particularly bloody. Jurassic Park was a bloodier movie, and it was PG13 when it was out.
<shrug>
Don't know what they were thinking with that rating.

I blame Janet Jackson's boob. For this and the fact that Team America had to tone down a scene of simulated sex between two puppets to avoid an NC-17 rating.

Yeah, thing is there's "Stylized" violence like 3-Stooges, then there's "Stylized" like Kill Bill's crazy 88 scene. Most of the violence is done up like a live-action cartoon. However there are some scenes with (in my opinion) gratuitous blood in them. Hm, yeah be one to leave the kids home for then. Thanks for the specifics.

Hm, yeah be one to leave the kids home for then. Thanks for the specifics. There's reasons you should leave the kids at home and blood isn't one of them. The movie is about the Yakuza picking on a small village. Many people get treated like shit all around. And I wouldn't at all be surprised if a child would be scared shitless by a certain character.

I can't believe you guys are actually having a discussion about why this movie rules, when you should be talking about how incredibly inane it is. You guys are dorks! Funny is never intentional. Spoof films try way too hard.

Voodoo, the movie rules. Stephen Chow rules. The entire comedy troupe rules.
Movies like Kung Pao: Enter the Fist or Scary Movie suck.
The difference is that the ones Chow makes take themselves pretty seriously. Shaolin Soccer for example, takes itself more seriously than any other soccer movies I can remember.

More reasons this movie rules:
Beautiful art direction Unpredictable story. Defies the shitty forumalaic approach of almost all movies today Hell, the opening Axe Gang sequences are worth the price of admission

I really don't think there was excessive blood in this film. There was blood, but maybe about 1/20th of the Crazy 88 scene in the whole movie. A cat dies, though. If your kids are attached to cats, that might bother them. And here's why Shaolin Soccer is a great movie. Beat that.

Awesome movie, all I really have to say about it. One question though, anyone know if much/anything was removed from the original?
I know shaolin soccer got ripped to shreds for the US theatrical release (was still funny though and got me to buy the dvd to see the much better original), but that was Miramax which has a bad track record on imports.

NECROOOOOOO! Yeah, so this finally came to the theater to which I won free tickets. You guys are totally right. I'd had it confused with the aforementioned-as-sucking Kung PAo, which was a gross mistake! I love kung-fu flicks, the more gratuitous and unbelievable the violence, the better. This movie ruled. Can't wait to see Shaolin Soccer. Can this evolve into an Asian Cinema thread? Go see Old Boy (if you haven't).

I know, I just couldn't remember that girl's name (Chiaki Kuriyama). Although Go Go Yubari is my fave in Kill Bill. Who was the really hot popular girl in BR? I like her too. The only Fukasaki film I've seen is BR (I haven't seen Part II yet).

The really hot popular girl is in the tv show Ace Wo Nerae over in Japan right now...errrr was, I think it's finished its run. That whole cast consisted basically of tv actors and "Beat" Takeshi Kitano who should be known for things like Hanabi and Kikujiro rather than Takeshi's fucking Castle.
