Picked it up today for a friend, gonna play through it before he gets it back. Anyone else get it? Will there be anyone here I can actually discuss the game with? a/s/l?
I almost didn't pick it up at all because of Tim Schaefer phoning in his answers to Gamespot's master storytelling piece like he was some sort of god. And no doubt it's painted my perception of the game. But, it seems, that everyone can't stop raving. We'll see. Considering I just came off of playing God of War.

I didn't realize it had been released. I don't pay attention to ship dates like I used to.
I will go and buy it, simply because Tim Schafer can do no wrong. Hopefully he won't change my mind. Yes, I'm looking at you Peter Molyneux.

I gave the demo a try last night; it felt to me like a fairly generic action-platformer with highly stylized graphics and far too many goddamn prerendered movies. They only give you the first (training) level to deal with, so it might get cool after you get OMFGL33T psychic powers later on in the game. What I played through was essentially combinations of swing on stuff/jump across gaps/punch things, so the game isn't particularly compelling me to purchase it.
Also, if the story introduction given in the demo is any indication, then Schafer's claims of storytelling godhood at laughable at best.

Decent gaming. Sucks compared to God of War. Story is about as compelling as The Cat in the Hat.
I may or may not finish it. Though my monetary guilt will probably force me to.

Has the story gotten any better?

Has the story gotten any better? Not particularly. I think it's because I just don't give a shit. I'll admit some of the level design is really freaking cool and does some things on the xbox I hadn't seen done before. But really it's just a platformer with some adventure elements and RPG elements. All of them work pretty well, but I don't know. It's just not.....clicking for me. It's good gaming and I can see why someone would want it. But right now I've got GREAT gaming on my table and good gaming just isn't cutting it.

Just picked it up. Didn't realize this was a Tim Schafer game (didn't see this thread before either)...I would have picked it up much earlier.
Oh, and yes, Schafer is some sort of God. You can't blame him for realizing it himself.

Besides BF2, I've been out of the loop with games.......I was jonesing for something new, so I made a trip to EB earlier and saw this. They didn't have Atelier Iris, and just about everything else new looked like it sucked.
[EDIT] I could make a post about NCAA Football if you like....?

Just finished the Basic Training. Which took quite a while actually.
Yeah, it does rule. So far.

Gameplay wise Psychonauts is nothing special, but the audio/visual elements are breathtaking. The first few levels are okay, and the last one is a serious pain in the ass, but numbers #5-9 are just gorgeously realized, as you get to explore the minds of a mutant, a Paranoid Schizo, a Manic Depressive, a Dissociative Identity victim, and Anger Management patient sequentially.

Just got to the "Goggalor" level. I'm really glad I picked this up. This is the kind of game that I wish would never end. Being a platformer, I can't really say it's exactly like the old Lucasarts games, but it's the closest equivalant.
And it's a damn shame that this thread keeps dying. It's that good folks.

You know, one of the big problems I had with it - it came out when I was still enjoying RE4 and God of War. As good as Psychonauts is, it doesn't compare to either one of those. It's more on the Jade Empire level while RE4 and GoW are on the Planescape Torment level.

I wasn't ready for God of War and Jade Empire when they came out. I bought them both, then turned them back a week later. Same goes for Bloodlines. I'll revisit them sooner or later, I guess.
[EDIT] Actually, Bloodlines was just buggy as hell.
[EDIT] Pondering on getting a GC just for RE4.

Don't. An upgraded version with extras hits the PS2 this fall.

And looks assy. I'm buying it as well just for the use of the chainsaw and the new kickass colored chainsaw controller as novelty (mostly because I really fucking love RE again due to 4) but really the GC edition is the one to get. The PS2 one just isn't up to snuff. That said, neither is the GC one if you don't have component cables and a decently kick ass TV. Ok, I've rambled. Let's make this easy.
1. Get the Gamecube one if you can get GC component cables and have a TV capable of 480p. 2. Get the PS2 one if you can't get GC component cables.

Newer GameCubes (model# DOL-101) do not have the component output port, only the original ones do (DOL-001).

Gamecubes at EBGames are $59.99 used. It's really the only way to buy one given costs. I've yet to see a single used Gamecube in my store that didn't have the digital output. But yes, the new ones don't have one.

I'm kind of in the market for HD. My "good" TV burned out, and the one I'm using now is shit, even by my standards (both would be shit by your standards probably ). Anyways, I didn't know it was coming out on PS2. I just checked out a trailer for it....It doesn't look any worse than other PS2 games. If it was only on the Gamecube, I'd still consider that, but now I don't see the point. I'll just deal with mediocrity until next gen. [edit] If the game is as good as people say, then I'll notice either way.

I checked out the demo of this on Steam and it was quite fun. I suppose I'll have to try it on Gametap and save the cash. Thanks for the link.

I may end up just purchasing this on the XBL classics. I don't have a controller worth playing this with on my computer.

If I didn't say it already, be careful of the Milkman Conspiracy level (the Suburbs). It can make you sick!

I've been playing this game on gametap recently, and it's so damn good I honestly feel guilty about not purchasing it at full price before.

It's pretty playable with a mouse and keyboard. I ended up actually preferring it in most parts; it allows a lot more precision when moving. I did bust out the 360 controller for a couple jumping puzzles though.

I would say Steam, but I'm not a console gamer so I'm used to the mouse/keyboard playing.

I played the game using a x360 controller on a PC and I had to mess around with the pad settings and change inputs to get the camera control to something I liked. I think the xbox version has this issue as well, your first person camera is always inverse to you moving some other view (the 3rd person I think). With a PC you can doctor it to be OK though (or at least I could because of my gamepad drivers). I don't remember any noticeable differences between xbox and PC versions, though the ones I did play were the normal xbox and pc retail versions and not xbl/steam. I'd say playing with a gamepad feels very comfortable and intuitive.
