It is in fact a part of germany, but due to the language the people speak and some political nonsense that is going on down there, lots of germans are hesistant to include them in our federal republic. They are "The free state of bavaria" if you ask some of them.

The Bavarians speak perfectly understandable. Plattdeutsch is ten times more removed from 'proper' German. Bavarians just like to annoy tourists from northern Germany by relying on their dialect too much. They like those large eyes and confused stares from paying customers :)
But seriously, all those comments are tongue-in-check. Just people trash talking each other for fun. Like when we are saying a Bavarian is when you breed some common sense and humor into a German and make him behave almost like an Austrian. ;)
They like their Christian party a wee bit too much, though. They basically own Bavaria since about ever. Elections there are just for giggles.

What, bavarians aren't German anymore? I can understand Austrians not wanting to be called Germans a bit having a seperate state and all but at this rate they're going to have to change "Von der Maas bis an die Memel," to "Von der Elbe bis an die Spree,".
