Why do we need this. Where is my 8 year old going to be that they need to call me. Where is my 12 year old going to be that they need to call me. Seriously, I'm baffled.

Oh yeah, that's a stellar design decision. Cell phones aren't annoying enough. We should put them in the hands of irresponsible children and give them the option of spamming colored lights at regular intervals.
the Firefly phone has just a handful of buttons instead of a standard keypad. Preprogrammed "Mom" and "Dad" keys allow kids to phone home. Additionally parents can program a third button with up to 20 other speed-dial options and set the phone to only accept calls from those numbers.
And like VCR's, I'm sure these won't be easier for kids to learn to program than adults.
