Next I need to get the remote admin stuff working so you cool kids can start kicking the public scum.

One thing I'd change the next time you're messing with it is game mode, and probably switch it over to conquest.  Team Deathmatch just isn't that popular because there are no objectives to it.  All you do is score points for killing the other guy, while conquest makes you capture spawn points.  The team with the most spawn points has their tickets (points) go down slower than the other team, and they get the added bonus of being able to spawn closer to the front and grab the equipment that's there.  It tends to focus the fighting a lot.

It also takes the emphasis off of pure killing skill.

Exactly.  I personally love playing engineers above any other class, because there's just something very special about seeing a vehicle hit one of your mines and blow the hell up.  Market Garden is excellent for this.  I can keep bridges largely secure just by mining the bridge.  Sure, it won't stop infantry, but they're easy for my other teammates to kill.

The explosives are nice too.  Nothing like tossing one from the top of a building and then waiting for the enemy to come near so you can set 'em off.  You can have all the sniper love you want, engineers are the true stealth killas.

This is beautiful. I can set up a schedule for the game to run, make all changes on the fly, wow.

Cool! I got stuck doing Easter at my in-laws yesterday (and came home and went right to bed, having been up WAY TO GODDAMNED EARLY for the baseball draft), so I didn't get a chance to play. Whirlyball playoffs tonight, so I may check in late. If not, tomorrow. Ph3@R my rusty FPS skilz.

Shockeye and co keep this up and I'll have to start checking the site on weekends. Damn you all imo.

I don't have Secret Wars, but I think I can get hold of the expansion disc, because the eqholic doesn't play BF much now that he's stuck on dialup. Spent much of saturday trying to learn how to fly those wacky BF:V helos, it'll be nice to get back into familiar territory with BF1942, though I'm wicked rusty (and you should all be thankful for that, heh).

I'll jump on later tonight, mondays I work late (til 9pmish).

Oh, and battlefield pwns imo :) Thanks again for the 'experiment'. And to reinforce what's been said: I only play Conquest, so you get at least a semblance of teamplay...and if the enemy wants to play it like DM, well....that much easier to win. I recommend also logging into the teamspeak server. I have it up and running (with shortcut: if anyone doesn't know that trick, I can hook you up), but I have to find my headset, because the only mic I have is my Shure SM58, which is XLR (connector) and doesn't play nice with my pc (yet).

I don't own Secret Wars- is that gonna cause a problem? Will it just force me to download a map, or will it bar me from playing?

I need some kind of wireless mic or something, that rigamarole was nuts last night. Would've been funny if you guys had seen it.

I also think I need a new gamepad. I really like the one I have (logitech cordless rumble pad 2), but it's only got three basic control systems, I need four (as my old thrustmaster firestorm has, but it's wired). 1- analog sticks/dpad, 2- face buttons, 3- shoulder buttons, 4- triggers. The problem arises when you have to gas the engine, apply rudder, steer, and shoot. Since the cordless pad doesn't have the fourth control system, I have to release one of the other systems to function. So I can be steering the plane, applying rudder and gassing the engine, but when it's time to fire the guns, I have to give up a control. Do I stop giving gas to the engine? Stop steering the plane? I tried setting the gas and rudders to the 4 shoulder buttons, but basically that meant I had no left rudder at all. It was the only time I approached effectiveness, but flying without a left rudder is nigh impossible for me, I'm crazy with ruddering, it's how I line up shots/bombs.

Anyway, that's what I was trying to gripe about last night, Shockeye. And my crappy setup trying to have a mic for TS.

As far as the server goes, I suggested taking the bots off, so yell at me if you miss them :) I'd like to see some of us get together and gang up on public players, but it might be difficult to lure pubbers to our server to play. It will be admin'd and I get a nice ping from NY, so it should be a good playing experience, but the game is rather long in the tooth (everyone donate money so Shockeye can buy a new pc and play Vietnam ;)).

Still, I had a great time trying to re-learn how to fly in 1942...if only those damned bots hadn't kept stealing 'my' plane, dernit. And that goddamned gamepad...

It looks like I should get about 33-35 FPS at 1024x768 on my rig for BF:V. Is it even worth it for me to try?

Are you using FSAA/AF? If so, don't use any at all. BF's engine is abysmal with FSAA/AF applied. For competetive play, I was on a 1 GHz tbird with a 128MB ti4400 (overclocked like mad), running at 1600x1200 (with bf1942, not vietnam, though). It ran far better in a high resolution than at 800x600 with 2xFSAA/AF applied.

As far as fps goes, is that under load or idle? If that's idle, no way. If that's under a load with players and vehicles and particles firing off, you could scrape by.

That would run on a XP 2100+ with a Ti4600 and 1gb of RAM.

Those numbers are based on load and they are an average of a regular playsession of BF:V on a Ti4600 scaled down from a P4 3.2GHz system to mine.

No FSAA or AF bullshit.

For some reason I disliked the original. I'll like the sequel. That's just how things are sometimes.

Was the server up and running? I could log in to the Manager, but couldn't find the server (even when I entered the IP address). It has been way too long since I did this- do I use Gamespot Arcade or just go through the BF1942 client?

Just load up the game and choose multplayer on the internet. Choose "Add Server" and type in the IP and port and connect from there.

I don't know how many people exactly are interested in playing, but 5v5 Infantry-only is a pretty popular format on the competitive/clan scene. Obviously you have to cull the map list somewhat and it's practically impossible to enforce the no-vehicle rule on a public server, it's the best way IMO to have the most fun with the smallest amount of people provided that you round up a group of people and configure the server with this in mind.

No need for expansions on the BF1942 server. We're not running any of those maps.

It seems the server was not broadcasting itself correctly to Gamespy so it wasn't being listed. It's been fixed.

Any play at all this weekend? I checked the server many times and was always the only one on it. I played a bunch on public servers and knocked a bit of the rust off. Managed to stay in the top half of the finishes on most maps, so my skills (such as they are) may not have atrophied as much as I had feared.

Let's set a time this week for all of us to get together and play against the drooling masses. We can get Teamspeak going if we really want to go coordinated.

Someone should really make a server-dependent piece of software called Marco Polo. It works like AIM only it's simply a name with icons next to it. You mouse over the name to find out what game and server they're on.

But that would be too fun. And we can't have that.

That is pretty much what the XBL friends list does- tells you who is on and what game they are playing. You can even send them a message, if you can type with the controller without going batshit crazy.

I am available every night this week (AFAIK)- anytime after 5:30 PDT or so.

Edit: I'll pick it up tonight after work. Be home around 8:45ish EST.
