Skinny-dippin' in a sea of Lee, I'd propose on bended knee...

You know, I can set up a BF1942 server if enough people want it. Our current servers aren't getting much use and I'm all for adding more servers if people will use them.

I'd do either that or Vietnam. I was totally burnt on 1942 for a long time, but I've been playing a bit more recently, and checking out some Vietnam, which was released during my burnt phase.

I should warn you the server is a total resource hog. That said, my clan was hosting several servers, one at 40 players, even. I think we had to shut a couple of our 32 player games down to host our 64-player league matches. Best way to go with bf1942, because of the larger scale, is to open it to the public and admin a bunch of folks from here so we can kick smacktards. We used to alternate between all taking one side and decimating the pubbers and splitting into our Alpha and Bravo configs and using pubbers to fill out the ranks and add some randomness.

I'm a Battlefield fanboi, though. I'd play more UT...but it's a bit too fast for me, I get smoked a lot, heh. I like the slightly slower pace of 1942. no idea how to fly choppers in Vietnam, haven't messed with them much, mostly learning maps still...but if I shed the rust I'm a pretty dern good pilot in 1942, it was my primary role in the clan (also an engineer and later medic out of laziness).

Same here.  I hate the run and gun games, but I'll play the hell out of a game like Day of Defeat, Rainbow Six, or BF1942.

Goddamn it Shockeye! I was replying to this sub-thread when you moved these posts! I thought my brain had finally given up the ghost  :-D

I could possibly be convinced to reinstall Bf1942 (I have Road to Rome too). Never did try Vietnam- did they ever get the balance problems worked out?

I'm a bastard, I know.

If there's interest I'll run over to EBGames later today and pick up the 3 pack of BF1942 for $30 and get things running on the server later tonight.

3-pack? What's in it? I might be able to borrow the game from a buddy...I'd love to be an admin..

BTW, what's the status on hacks in the series? Prevalent, etc?

I'd definitely be up for BF1942 if the server were sufficiently populated.  We can't even muster enough people for a UT or HL deathmatch session very often, though, and BF needs at least 10 people to play properly, IMO.  So I'm skeptical.   tongue

Count me in. I'm not a big "UT type" fan either. HL2 Deathmatch I like, but it's no fun with only 1 or 2 people. Especially when those other players are usually Fab, Samwise, or Kenrick  wink

Perhaps opening up some of the servers to the unwashed masses might not be a bad idea, then.

If you decide to do that with HL2, make it team deathmatch. It's so much better that way.

I can make the server without the retail box.

I have to update some of our server software in order to get BF1942 going.

I ran into a small problem last night updating our Cpanel installation. Someone from Cpanel just got back to me and I hope to have the BF1942 server running this evening.

Good deal.  I fired it up yesterday and since then I've been practicing dive bombing and dog fighting, but I still suck at it.  I only hit my target, if it's something small like a tank, about 1 time in 5.  I get really obsessive about this kind of thing.

I spent a week learning how to fly a helicopter competently in Desert Combat (which is flawed, but still good, IMO), and man, I loved being a Blackhawk jockey.  I wouldn't worry about setting up a DC server, though, DC is a love it or hate it sort of thing.  Vanilla BF1942 is just fine.

Due to possible performance issues I am only going to start out with a 16 player server until I know what kind of impact BF1942 makes on our server.

EBGames, Best Buy, CompUSA, and Wal-Mart have the BF1942 Anthology for ~$30. Gamestop still lists it for $40.

It includes BF1942 and the two add-ons.

I'm sure you can get a used copy of BF1942 for ~$20 at EB Games, but the 3-pack for $30 is a better deal.

Quote from: BLABBERMOUTH.NET
Reunited Swedish hard rockers EUROPE are in the process of booking a headlining U.S. tour beginning in late April. Confirmed dates so far are as follows:

Apr. 22 - House of Blues - Anaheim, CA
Apr. 30 - Jaxx - Springfield, VA
May 02 - B.B. King's Blues Club & Grill - New York, NY
May 04 – Trocadero - Philadelphia, PA
May 06 - Crocodile Rock - Allentown, PA

EUROPE are continuing to tour in support of "Start from the Dark", the group's first collection of new material since 1991's "Prisoners In Paradise". "Start from the Dark" was produced by Kevin Elson, who had previously worked with EUROPE on their multi-platinum 1986 release, "Final Countdown", and features a "heavier" direction than on the group's earlier albums.

Ok, I think I have the server running. I can't test it from work.

209.59.137.153:14567

password is: frag13

reserved slot password is: catass

At idle it takes 18% CPU and 5.5% memory.

Cool.  Trying it now.

ETA:  Cannot connect.  Weird, because it checks your Punkbuster status, and kicks you off until you enable it, but even when you do and come back to try to reconnect I keep getting "cannot connect" errors.

ETA Again:  Okay, can't connect with the catass password, but it works just fine with frag13.  You've got nothing but bots duking it out?

There's bots in there fighting? Didn't know.

AI CPU usage was set at 20% and AI skill was at 75%.

I changed the game types to CTF and TDM.

I just restarted the server.

I'll try to connect and play a bit when I get home.

Only 75%?  It must have been the lack of my teammates kamikazeing me in jeeps and fuckers camping planes that made me think they were more competent than they actually were.
