So this is available on HBO Max for the rest of the month and I decided to watch it.

The plot was probably the worst of the four new Godzilla/Kong flicks, but it ended up being more entertaining than Kong Skull Island for me with the “George and Lizzy destroy a city” classic arcade Rampage stuff later on mostly redeeming the first half’s “plot development”

I have to agree that the plot was really bad (somehow even worse than the original God vs Kong movie's)  but the use of colours and daytime in most of the monster fight scenes made it worth the watch as you could actually see what was going on.

This movies need to be treated like porn, ignore the plot, fast forward through the talkie parts, get right to the action.

I have a certain affection for kaiju films just because it's what we watched in the afternoons on TV on Saturdays but I'm not sure I've ever seen an honest-to-goodness good kaiju movie. Maybe the first Godzilla. I don't thing the original King Kong really counts as one.

Same here, and if the filmmakers manage to convey a real sense of the size of the monsters (which helps in a great theater or even with my projector setup), then I usually enjoy myself.  The last Godzilla one I thought was the best, because Ghidorah in a top end theater with the sound maxed out was goddamn intense.

Doesn't look like this one is available locally, thanks socialism.  May have to raise the blag flag, which, well, thanks socialism!

I kinda hated most of Pacific Rim, maybe because it was actually close to being good.

One basic problem that even a good kaiju movie has is solving the visualization of scale and I can't think of any of them that have actually figured out how to depict action at kaiju-level scales that switches frame rapidly back to human scales and then puts human scales in the frame with kaiju scales. The Transformers movies have that problem even worse. You can solve it in animation but not in live-action w/CGI. You really gotta choose: either the only interesting shit is happening in the kaiju frame and the human stuff is just cross-cutting side action or the human stuff is what matters and the kaiju scale is like a natural disaster, too big to fully visualize or comprehend. Cloverfield maybe succeeded by doing the latter. I suppose the original King Kong did ok keeping Fay Wray and Kong somewhat related, but that's because Kong is just barely bigger than human scale rather than the size of a skyscraper.

YOu are asking an awful lot as basically you are talking about people interacting with puppets that are filmed at a different tile and a different scale. Some of the Holywood stop motion monster movies did a decent enough job of it though.

And honestly The hated 98 Zilla movie did a really good job of having the monster interacting with the environment and people by doing stuff like over the shoulder shots from Broadrick as Zilla walks past, and that scene where the cameraman survives between his toes, and of course when he killed the helicopter with his jaws. I still say if they had just called it "the beast from 20000 Fathoms" everyone would stop fashionably hating that movie.

There is one scene in "Godzilla vs Biollante" were someone in s skyscraper fired a shoulder mounted rocket into G's mouth and G rocked back screaming. It was cut so well it was totally believable.

Good bashing action, lame everything else.  Skull Island still the best of the modern ones IMO.

Skull Island didn’t even really have any good bashing scenes. You crazy.

I think most of the new Godzilla/Kong movies have been pretty bad, with the most complimentary thing I can say about them is that they were forgettable. I haven't seen the 2014 Godzilla, King of the Monsters I forget the fights within like a week of watching it and the best thing about Skull Island was John C. Reilly's character. This one was just blatantly stupid. The entire Hollow Earth shrine scene just broke my brain. I get that we weren't supposed to take this with any sort of seriousness but I think I may just have moved past Kaiju movies. One thing I found extremely weird was just how much the fights in Hong Kong at night between Kong and Godzilla looked like 2 dudes in rubber suits fighting amongst miniature scenery. I don't know if this is what they were going for, but just something about the way the CGI creatures moved and interacted with the buildings just instantly made me think of that. If it wasn't intentional, then that statement probably would have offended the shit out of the CGI guys.  why so serious?

Haven't seen KvG yet, but I can't imagine the Hollow Earth Shrine scene you mention being any worse than the "godzilla lair" scene from King of Monsters.  That entire bit was just straight up nuts, as it wasn't even "hollow earth", it was straight up: we drive a fucking submarine into a gigantic underwater temple at lest a mile or so under water where godzilla has been napping, in a place that there is literally no functional way that human beings could have EVER reached in order to construct said temple because water levels on planet earth simply do not function that way....

It was Atlantis, which doesn't make it scientifically sound but at least it fits the story.

This movie was fine for the fight scenes. I loved the stupidity of the hollow earth stuff.

You're all too old, this is just as stupid as any other Godzilla movie. My kids loved it and moved on.

This was fine. Big monsters busting shit. It was ludicrous, and the plot made no damned sense at all, but it was fine.
