Mr Worf, prepare to angst and sparkle. From the producers of Venom! And 2 other Spiderman projects. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DfYOcI4ITio

I was just looking at this year's superhero movies and I'm gonna be able to take a nice long break from the genre this year. The only ones I have any desire at all to see are the Wonder Woman sequel and The Eternals, and the last one is just to see if Feige can keep up the streak of making a totally unpromising source pan out as a viable film. Some of them, like this one, I not only don't want to see, I doubt I will see even if people say "hey this was actually pretty good".

I thought the trailer was fine. It's a completely unnecessary movie, and the addition of the Vulture at the end shows that Sony is STILL trying to get that Sinister Six movie going. I have no investment in the character, and Leto has started to annoy me ever since Blade Runner and Suicide Squad so...

Eh, I'll check it out. It's clearly a Dr. Who spinoff.

When she crossed over, she was just a ship. But when she came back... she was bullshit!

So I looked up the director, and literally the only movie of his I have seen is Safe House which was...I can't remember, I saw it and remember Ryan Reynolds, but nothing else about it. This does not fill me with confidence.

It has the Chernobyl guy, so there's that.
This looks pointless. I don't know why, but I don't like Jared Leto for whatever reason. I am trying to think if I have seen one movie he was in and coming up empty.

I have a bit of fondness for the character because one of the first comic books I owned was an older issue of Spider-man with one of his first appearances.
That said he's a character that hasn't been particularly exciting solo, and who doesn't really have any memorable story arcs to pull from. His motivations are that he has to drink blood to live and that he's looking for a cure. Without someone like Spider-man, Ghost Rider, or Blade for him to play off of, all you're left with is self-loathing vampire doing medical research when he can manage to think clearly, or an anti-hero even less interesting than Venom played by an actor with a fraction of the talent Tom Hardy has.

In the comics, he's just another riff on the Hulk: good man tormented by being unable to fully master or control his transformation into something monstrous. Marvel had a whole stable of characters with this basic structure--Ghost Rider settled into being another one after a few years of storytelling where Blaze could control the transformation completely, Werewolf by Night, etc. as well as some purely villainous examples (Calvin Zabo/Mister Hyde, Karl Lykos/Sauron, Jackson Day/the Corruptor) where the 'good' persona is deemed not very interesting in terms of his ability to control what he becomes.

This is on Netflix now, so I watched it. It's bad, but not excruciating; if you go into it with your expectations set to "shot-on-VHS bargain bin monster movie" you'll have fun. The X-Men-2-esque visual effects were kinda cool. The script was so pointless that they should have just thrown it out and made the whole movie a fifteen-minute montage of Morbius flying around and eating people.
