I almost made this thread earlier today. Jazzed, and initial reviews seem to like it.

I loved Hereditary.  Seeing this opening day.

Well, I loved this.  Ari Aster is consistent.  In terms of how the film is structured, it's very similar to Hereditary, including a slow, unsettling build up and a crazy final act that has great tension.  It's pretty much a break-up movie that just happens to take place in a remote Scandinavian commune and celtic rituals ensue.

I have beefs.  The biggest is that it feels like some of the characters were added in later revisions of the script to make the movie gorier, or barring that, they were just written to make really stupid decisions that got them into trouble to up the kill count.  I can see the need to build tension, but it sometimes feels overwrought.  Despite its flaws though, it's great.  If you liked his last movie you'll probably enjoy this.

If you like the looks of the trailer but don't want to bother with a theater, I would encourage you to rethink that and see it on a big screen.  The photography, lighting and colors really are an important part of the experience.  Lots of mirrors/reflective surfaces, too.  It's a beautiful movie.

I have strong thoughts but I'll wait til after this weekend. It was probably one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen though. Which doesn't really spoil anything.

That's pretty much exactly what Kermode said, so I guess it depends on the critic.

I had to look it up, and yeah, his thoughts on it mostly mirror mine. The more I think about it, I think Midsommar might be the better movie (between it and Hereditary). I think Hereditary does things *I* want to see in film more (than say anything done in Midsommar), but Midsommar is probably superior.

Eventually I'll be able to watch them back to back which would really help with my thoughts on this.

Regardless, the man is an absolute master and I want nothing but more and I don't want him to waste time making a fucking musical.

Knowing nothing about this at all, the pics and title give me a The Wicker Man (the original) feel- is that at least somewhat accurate? Because I could get behind that.

Oh it's definitely a movie with The Wicker Man feel.  And without any reservation I prefer this to The Wicker Man, which is a movie that I really enjoy.

Also, after sitting with this movie for a few days I now think it's a better film than Hereditary.  It's more coherent as a story, and even though the photography was stellar in Hereditary, it's even better here and tells part of the story.

Regardless though, just like Schild said, they're both instant classics.  These are movies people will be watching thirty years from now.

Not a ton more to say here that hasn't already been said. I have complete praise for this film. To me the sound and music was even more important than the visuals. The director has a way of making me feel very uncomfortable, then slowly eases me into comfort before shaking me again. It is masterful.

Lots of laughing at my showing. I don't think it was a movie most people understood or could try to appreciate.

Yes, this movie is *most* excellent at subverting expectations.

The only moment of laughter in my theater (like, where the whole theater lost it) was when uhhhh, the other girls joined in during the sex scene. "Joined" in.

Anyway. Not a horror movie. Basically a masterpiece. Everyone should watch it. The gore is telegraphed and you can close your eyes.

I'm gonna go way outside the box here and say this is what I wished Blue Valentine had been.
