Edgar Wright's new movie. Trailer here for those who clicked on this thread despite the name. Sounds like it got a very positive reaction at SXSW.

I keep hearing that old Simon and Garfunkel song the moment I see the title, even before a trailer.

It plays in the closing credits.

This movie is damned good. To quote Guillermo Del Toro, "It's An American in Paris on wheels and crack smoke".

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

It is definitely a musical. And an action movie. I also felt it went consistently downhill: The first act is one of the best films I've seen this century, the second act is terrific, and the finale is... slightly above-average popcorn fare.  Nothing particularly original by itself, but cliches are all combined in original ways. The most mainstream and mature thing that Edgar Wright has ever done, for better and for worse.

Not impressed with the young lead and his love interest, though they don't have much to work with personality-wise. Foxx and Spacey chew much scenery, Hamm gnaws a little. Several great character moments for the rest. I especially liked the nephew and the Butcher.

Saw it matinee. Slightly underwhelmed, but my expectations were high and I was not truly disappointed.

Yeah but that first act was a goddamn masterpiece. The end of the second act/ start of the third's weakness was purely from Wright trying to pay too much homages to Heat. It felt very much like that action scene.

The third act's biggest weakness was that it was nowhere near as well choreographed as the first two. There were some moments that played well, particularly in the garage, but overall it felt like they'd rushed and didn't put the time into the details that the beginning had.

Because that first act; Holy shit. So many great little details from the start of the heist through the chase and then punctuated by the walk for coffee. All the little beats in the background that were synced to the music. It set a bar that the rest of the film couldn't live up to. Take that out and it's still a great movie, but with it there you see how much better it could have been with just a bit more polish.

Still worth the $12 compared to anything else out now and for a few weeks. Easily the best movie I've watched this year.

I thought it was great. So well-made. I was entertained. And it was art.

What's this movie about?

Going by the stupid title I expected it to be something like Boss Baby.

It's a sort of heist movie, but told mostly from the perspective of the getaway driver, a young man with crazy driving skills named Baby, who is being forced to be a Getaway driver because he is being blackmailed by one of the big Crime bosses in town.  Baby wants out, but everybody knows that getting out isn't exactly that easy.

That description doesn't make it sound that much better. I should probably look up a trailer or two.

I'm dumbfounded though how anyone would have thought that Baby Driver was a good title. I suppose that most people would assume it's a movie like Boss Baby instead of a heist story.

The soundtrack and choreography are the clear winners here, and I agree the initial setup was so well done, I'm not sure they could've topped it. But they certainly did try, I found the gunfight choreographed to Queen was a great idea that was a bit too on the point at times.

But overall it was a well-crafted movie and I wish more action movies would take a cue from it.

Also helps that I love a movie with a good soundtrack.

If soundtracks made a movie, Suicide Squad would win Oscars. I was worn out on Baby Driver due to hype in a few of the internet locales I visit (most notably /r/movieposterporn)

You have to understand that a lot people see movie trailers in the theater or online, or see commercials on TV, come across reviews, or failing all that stumble into a theater and look through a synopsis binder as opposed to asking people on a message board to describe the movie to them.

Yeah, this was great.  Edgar Wright's been doing a lot of promotion for the film and I especially enjoyed listening to him on Sirius XM a week or two ago.  He talked about how the whole movie sprung from him listening to a song and thinking it would make a great soundtrack for a heist.  It was the song used in the initial heist, which is probably why that scene was so incredibly tight.  He'd obviously been thinking about it for a long time before production began.

I barely knew anything, I remember the Heat comment here when I skimmed because the old lady gave this as one of two choices. Good enough for me. Also glad I didn't know anything beyond 'Jamie Foxx is in it' (and actually I expected it to be bad because Jamie Foxx was in it).

Yeah.  He does.  A lot of bad movies.  I'd say mostly bad movies.

For the love of all that's holy, he was in that awful Annie remake.

Hey, man, you think I have weird taste, I think you have weird taste and that's all good. Keeps things interesting, because I think you have good taste even though I disagree with it most of the time   why so serious?

I think anywhere our tastes overlap is something undeniably awesome.

But yeah, I don't like Jamie Foxx. I think Jamie Foxx is way too into Jamie Foxx to be a good actor. He's the Kanye of acting.

I also don't like Kevin Spacey, but he actually wasn't too bad in this because he mostly kept out of the way.
