Why is there a 9 year old in it? Here's hoping he gets eaten.

It's apparently Predator 4, not a reboot.

Also suppose to be a 'big budget' spectacle movie.  Which is the exact opposite of a predator movie.

 Ohhhhh, I see.

It's kind of a Shane Black thing.

Because what we need in a movie that involves people getting hunted and skinned is a child to add the cuteness factor.

At this point I'm half betting on a Predator war with Tanks and airstrikes. Might as well.

I've liked the movies Shane Black has done recently so I'm down with it.

This series has never been good, only the first one, so it's hard to get enthusiastic about them.

'big budget spectacle movie" is a euphamism for PG13 rated CGI crapfest for foreign rubes.

Yeah, mostly agree.  It was an amazing stand alone movie that created a narrative structure that's been copied endlessly since.

Still, though I haven't seen it in awhile, I do remember enjoying Detective Murtaugh Vs. Predator.

The Robert Rodriguez Predator movie with Aiden Quinn was actually pretty good.

You mean Predators, with Adrian Brody. And yeah, if you take it as a direct sequel (ignoring AvP), it's a great movie.

It has never stood-up for me. I recall liking it immensely when it first came out, but any viewings since I've just not enjoyed.

Hmm, guess just taste then.  It's one of those few movies (like Princess Bride) I can just re-watch about a thousands times and never get bored with.

Ehhhhh, I will say that I overall enjoyed the movie, but I'm not going to call it a great movie.  It just didn't feel like it lived up to it's potential, and sort of limped along at points.

Really, the only bad predator movies have been the AvP movies.  Predator 1, 2 and Predators have all been either amazing or reasonably good.

I kind of like the first AvP movie.  I mean, it's not as good as the Predator movies, but still.

I have not seen AvP2.

Predator is my favorite sci-fi horror franchise. AvP is not predator though the first one is OK as expanded universe for both franchises.

The original Predator is great. Some might not know that Shane Black is actually in the original as Hawkins (the guy that tells pussy jokes). I barely remember Predator 2. Predators is very watchable. The first AVP is a horrendous shit show from the guy that brought us the Resident Evil movie franchise and who would go on to do the terrible Death Race remake. The second AVP felt like a fan film with a $5000 budget and was by no means any good but I still liked it better than the first AVP.

Predator 2 is my favorite of the series.

There's something nice about an urban/real world setting for this type of movie that other movies just don't do. And that particular setting, I thought, was extremely well done for something that was basically the bastard child of schlock action and horror.

Heh, yeah, currently re-watching it (my previous post made me remember I'm an adult with disposable income and the internet, and I don't actually have an excuse not to re watch anything at whim).  Acting and characters are super over the top bad, but in a likable 80's action sort of way.  Setting it in the 'Urban Jungle' was overall a brilliant idea that kept theme with the original film while being original itself (they could have just basically redone the original, like Predators basically did).

I also enjoy the fact its a 1990 film set in 1997 LA, with all the fun "society will begin to totally collapse in the future" 80's theme that entails.   awesome, for real

I really liked Predators and I thought there was enough divergence and newness to make it interesting.

I will say that both AVP movies were dire beyond belief.  It still amazes me that you could fuck something like that up.  I seem to remember the second one had real, REAL issues with darkness and you could go literally 10 minutes without a clue as to what was happening.  Didn't they end up in the sewers at one point ?  I seem to remember not seeing a single thing that was going on....

Sad thing is that I was excited when they first announced it.  Because I made the mistaken belief that it would be an adaptation of the comic, which was set in the Alien universe (colonial planet that gets an alien infestation from Predators releasing them to hunt, ending up in a giant Alien/Predator/Space marine clusterfuck).  That would have been fun.  Not what they actually did.

Yeah, the entire fucking AVP2 was dark as shit until they blew something up. It was also stupid beyond belief yet still somehow better than the first AVP. It wasn't even good in a "aliens fighting predator" sort of way.

We forget how shitty things were in the late 70s/80s, added to real financial trouble with major cities (NYC declared bankruptcy in the 80s I believe, or almost did).  https://c24215cec6c97b637db6-9c0895f07c3474f6636f95b6bf3db172.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/interactives/2014/ten-economic-facts-about-crime/assets/crimefig1.png

Pretty much peaked out around '90.  It's basically just the Disco Stu fallacy, but crime and the general decline of many metropolitan areas was a real thing.

Oh, I totally understand why the future looks that way from the era, just saying I've always enjoyed that particular view specifically.

I love how you can tell how society was going in the past based on the sci-fi movies of the decade.  "The Future" of the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's are all very distinct.

Considering I see most of the Sci-Fi of the 00's and 10's as a continuation of the 80's, that's not a cheering thought. I also can't argue with the whole "society will begin to collapse" theme of the 80's much these days.  why so serious?

If you were of a certain age when P2 came out, I can see loving it. I feel the same way about the stupidity that is Starchaser: Legend of Orin, Yellowbeard, and Cherry 2000. Awful films that I still will watch once in a while. It's just not that good for me. :)

Digressing back to the actual movie this thread is about. Why don't I see Yvonne in that picture, she's listed as attached on IMDB.

80's and 90's Sci-fi is pretty distinctly different.  All of the 80's stuff had the major cities falling into extreme crime, corporations taking over everything, and extreme over the top commercialization.  Outside of early 90's stuff (which you can lump in with the 80's era stuff), it's all about egalitarian futures, where the future is sort of similar to as it is now, but everything has a touch screen monitor attached to it and everything is clean.  Like Steve Jobs masturbating over everything instead of Gordon Gekko.  Which pretty much runs up through the 00's (do we have a fucking name for that decade yet?), before the financial crisis.  Think Gattica, Eraser, Demolition Man, 6th Day, ect.

Yes, but given P2 is 1990 it's wholly a child of the 80's. Conceived, written, filmed and released before the turn of the decade was realized. Which was my point, I think.

But, again, Yvonne. Where is she.
