Next year Amazon and the BBC are releasing a 6 part adaptation of Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. The Showrunner and writer of the series will be Neil Gaiman so I think we can be pretty sure that this will be amazing.

David Tennant and Michael Sheen are playing Aziraphale and Crowley. It's still on track to be released in 2018 (in the UK at least). 2019 for the US. But there's no way I'll be able to wait that long. So Yarrr, I guess.

David Tennant is channeling his inner Bill Nighy.

Looks fun.

They released the opening title sequence the other day as another little teaser.  Only a few months until this comes out and I'm jazzed.

Episode and a half in, this is good, with two caveats.

Like most Prachett or Wodehouse adaptations it struggles to present internal monologue and narration and make them as funny as it is on the page. It feels like Gaiman wanted to include all of Pratchett's really good bits but sometimes they just don't fit.

Whenever neither aziraphale or crowley are on screen it is less good.

But I bought another streaming dongle to watch this and no regrets so far.

3 episodes in for me and I'm enjoying it. I don't think it's quite as good as the book but it's rare that a TV adaptation ever is.

I stalled halfway through the second episode. It isn’t bad but the change in the narrative order of some bits was jarring. I think if I hadn’t just re read the book earlier this week things might have bothered me considerably less.

I’ll get back to it in a couple days. I may just not have been in the right mood to binge a show like this.

I watched the first episode and it felt a bit slow. Of course, it's been literally 20 years since I read the book so remembering details from it is right out, which means I kind of struggle while watching it remember if that's how it went in the book. Tennant and Sheen are clearly enjoying themselves though.

So far it's been very true to the book. Though they've expanded Anathema Device and Newt's roles a bit.

Michael Sheen and David Tennant are spot on as Aziraphale and Crowley. So far I've really enjoyed the series with one exception. I don't really like the narration. Frances McDormand is not necessarily a bad fit but the directon they've given her makes the narration something that doesn't really fit the wit of the source material

I think the issue I have with 'God' is that she is mostly reading narration from the book rather than dialog that makes sense as God. It isn't even clear why she as a character is talking to the audience.

Her characterisation of God is also getting in the way. The book narrator is written as a kind of mischievous hitchhiker's guide editor, but God is being acted as a serene being.

It is as if Bertie Wooster's narration were being read in the voice of Jeeves.

First world problems mind you...

I walked away with similar issues about the narration.  In my head, it was a super dry British man reading it.  A John Cleese type.  Otherwise, absolutely loved this.

If you like "this kind of thing" you probably owe it to yourself to read some Gaiman and Pratchett.  Good Omens was the very first thing I read by either of them.

Good Omens is the only thing by Gaiman I actually enjoyed. Pratchett's stuff is a blast.

Goddamn, I loved this.  The book is easily one of my favorite things ever and from casting to pacing, they nailed it.  The McDornand bits were tolerable, if only because I can't think of another way to actually get the footnotes (which were largely the funniest parts about the book) to convey properly.

The narration is just Pratchett monologuing. So either keep them and give the actor the note 'just do it like Terry Pratchett monologuing' or cut them.

Just to let you all know a second series of Good Omens has been approved. It'll consist of six episodes and will be released in 2023 sometime. It's going to be written by Neil Gaiman based on notes for a sequel that he and Terry Pratchett were working on. He'll also be show-runner for the project.

It might be, but I died at the start over the newspaper headline typo: everyday (unremarkable) instead of every day (each 24 hours).
