Good on you.

I came to the conclusion around late October that we largely choose how miserable our life is perceived to be. It was destroying me and my marriage. I've gone another direction since then and been much happier. Thus my reduced presence here. You guys tend to foster a negative mindset.

First off, congrats on new life/attitude directions. I've spiraled the negative drain a few times myself, and I know how hard it can be to turn it around.

That said, wasn't that last statement a little pot calling the kettle black? Quivering ass cheeks aside, I've always found your posts to be some of the more critical/cynical here. (I'm not trying to be inflammatory and certainly not attacking you, just stating my perception.)

Okay, I guess I mostly answered my own question, but I'm still curious what about this board spurs the negativity in you? I've found, to my own surprise, that this place is actually a lot less angsty/cynical/nutcasey than most communities on the web.

But then, I don't drop down into the politics board much. I'm missing stuff aren't I?

Solely responsible for the thread on "The Condom Wall."

I agree with the board being on the depressive side.

A lot of people here are on a"The world is going to end" mindset.

Given how beginning of 2016 was a torment for me it was still a fairly alright year with the highlight was winning a national gold medal. Not the most prestigious category but being the best new player in the country is still alright.

I missed the thread where one of the group won a gold medal.

As for local negativity, I have learned that if I want to stop enjoying a game then I should just read the F13 thread about that game (unless that game is HEX).  Otherwise it's just random moaning about life, which is its own brand of fun.  I'd still rather read someone here complaining about _______ than other internet places.  At least we have a shared background.

I don't even socialize with you guys on Fasebook because it is a little tiring.  Also mostly the other people there.  I do most of my socialization on Instagram.  That's how I know Voodoo Lily is alive.

One thing I know about myself is I almost always reflect the attitude I perceive in the people around me.  If I come off as overly cynical and bitter it's in large part because I take that as the tone of the audience.  I have been surrounded by such folks here and IRL for a long time. (Archs are a bitter bunch).  Since I've moved on out of architectural life irl I realized I'd carried this tone with me for a long time and this place was helping to foster it.

I'm abandoning the attitude that everything in large part sucks. It really doesn't, things just are. Changes happen culture moves on and you can adapt or be bitter your standards aren't met by those around you. They never will be so just keep them for yourself and let those with lower standards be and fail or succeed as they will.

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.

Huh. I dont drag f13 off the web and into my personal life. In fact most people I've met in the last five years don't know it exists.

That said, I'm trying to figure out the next few years of my life and I have a woefully distinct feeling I might end up in politics or politic tangential. Which is frightening.

If Al Franken can do it, so can you.  I've considered it.  Seems like a job where I can just be a jackass and succeed wildly.  Also it's apparent that anyone can be POTUS, so that is encouraging.

I resolve that when I have money again, I will hire a personal trainer so I can watch him workout.  I would also give up resolutions for Lent if I hadn't given up Lent for Lent.

Anyone who's a millionaire.

OK, so it's mostly encouraging to me.  And terrifying to others.

It was getting really difficult to stay out of politics locallly. So glad I got into the art thing, I can go tilt at abstract windmills instead.

Oddly, I just named my latest Minecraft world "Quixotica" with the MOTD "Tilting at chunky windmills".
