IF YOU WANT AN INVITE TO DISCORD, PM ME.

So I liked having an ACTIVE IRC channel, but I'm pretty tired of having IRC itself in general. I signed up for Discord, would people take a look at it and see if it may be something that could get more of us into a chat room regularly?

I guess I'm mostly talking to Hex folks, but I'd love to have it more active than that.

As an aside, I'm amazed at how slow Steam has been to properly support guilds/groups. What a shitshow.

Steam groups are pretty decent for small group voice chats.

not voice, just chat room with chat rooms for whatever games. I really hate IRC.

I mean, we can use voice, but I don't care about voice.

I've used Discord before for Minecraft server groups, works fine. IRC is so... 90s.

I like the fact that it keeps history for channels you are on even if you don't have it running (compared to a normal irc client).

It just seems all around good. Also, I kinda prefer chat to almost anything else these days.

Discord is basically gaming-flavored Slack, run by Curse. Anyway, I'll try to remember to hop on from time to time.

How can you be tired of IRC? I've used it for 20 years (UO alpha/Meridian 59 launch) and don't plan on quitting.

Because it's fucking dreadful and always was, but it was so convenient there was no reason not to use it. Now there are reasons?

How is it dreadful? Tuck it away in a screen session (or use tmux if you are fancy - but if you're fancy you're probably using slack) and connect to it when you feel like it.

Cause you need an always on server to get real use out of that.  I have 3 different devices I check chats on (laptop, desktop, phone) and being able to have them all synced, view history, and get mobile notifications of messages if I'm away is extremely valuable without messing with the very complicated setup of mimicing that in IRC.

I don't mind IRC and hate change, but I guess I'll download this when I get home and give it a shot.

I really like discord and was trying to use it with a couple of different groups, and still sort of do. I also changed to using discord for the Landmark guild who never used teamspeak, and the discord I created for that was hardly used.

Some good info on permissions and setting it up is here > Discord Permissions

I'm willing to put up with a lot of user-unfriendly Linuxy bullshit but "every user should just run their own server in addition to the actual server" is, uh, pretty squarely inside the boundaries of "dreadful".

I'd prefer slack too, since I already have it running all the time. I have other various interest group chats on there too, so not being business focused is fine.

Edit: checking it out though, I like the voice options ..

Does Discord work in a web browser?  I keep Slack open while I'm at work sometimes but don't want to download any extra software on my office computer.

People with permissions can actually make permanent invites.

Honestly, there's a lot of really great things with discord, including phone support, and the voice quality was really good compared to TS/Ventrilo. I hadn't used the new ones with chat/forum things integrated, but really like discord and do think it's great for guilds, twitch broadcasters (where I was member of a few). Being free and under constant development, along with only being just over a year old, make this something to evolve with imo.

I've been using Discord for several months now, and it's made it really really easy to keep in contact with multiple disparate groups from different games/MMOs I talk to. Image/file-sharing is absurdly simple, and it even has one-on-one voice chat, so it's ended up replacing both Skype and Mumble for me.

I think it's been falsely advertised to us and we should consider a class action lawsuit.

It will be, when they do updates.

Also, since the other invite (number 2) expired, I decided to create a permanent one for this thread.
