Sitting in a brewery on day 1 of my Oregon trip, watching Seattle play Portland and wanting both to lose, while slightly blitzed on local ipa. I will say, Astoria is a rather cool little town
My hotel room has no bathroom though.

That seems like a disadvantage.

Been a long time since I've stayed in a place where the bathroom is in the hall or whatever. I stopped doing B&Bs mostly just because I didn't want to have to talk to the person running it in the morning.

I've already had a local old guy ask if I was gay like his son, because some how travelling on your own equates to being gay?

You did go to the Goonies house, right?

Also Ft. George brewery is located in Astoria, does a good few beers.

We spent all last week in Pacific City, about an hour or two south of where you are. I've said before, and say again - OR coast is my favorite place on this planet. Enjoy your trip. :)

Maybe he was just trying to hook his son up?

I used to spend a lot of summers as a kid just a little south of there in Newport/Otter Rock. I agree, the Oregon coast is one of my favorite places as well.

I think Astoria has one, we usually don't get further north than Seaside...

Yeah, the Oregon coast is just great. I have always been a bit puzzled that it's not more crowded, but I guess the weather is a significant part of that.

Yeah, growing up in Northern California, the coast was something we all went to for summer vacation every year (since in the Sacramento valley were I grew up, it could get up to 115 in summer).  But its more of a local type thing to escape heat (and enjoy the beautiful scenery).  Anybody not local'ish probably thinks of other climates to go visit for vacation.  Also, there is a whole lot of coast.  It's all basically the same beautiful awesomeness from northern California up through Washington.  That's a lot of space for tourist to spread out.

The Tillamook cheese factory is close to there. Good tour and awesome ice cream.

Also: spruce goose aircraft museum

Oh yeah, that is a surprisingly great collection of aircraft!  It rivals the Smithsonian.  Amazing place to go if you are into seeing just about every aircraft (military and non-military) ever produced.

Also, last trip out I ever took with my grand father before he died.  :(

In cannon beach right now, absolutely gorgeous. Waiting for the tide to go out so I can get a closer look at haystack rock. Plan to stop in tilamuk on the way to Portland.

Fair warning: Tillamook 100% all the time smells like manure. It's not a place we hang out, personally.  :)

Bill's tavern has good burgers and beers though. Skip Pelican, which is good but very flipping expensive.

Go to the Rogue Brewery in Newport.  Get that burger that's topped with pulled pork and bacon.   Love Letters

Our friend's family has a place near Yachats.  It's wonderful to visit in the summer.

Ate at pelican, since it was directly across the street and my hotel had no food.
Decided to skip Tillamook and go to Evergreen aeronautics museum instead. Totally worth it for the Spruce Goose  ando the SR71.

You're doing it right.

I had a really good BBQ burger from Fat Head's in the Pearl district. Cheryl's on 12th had really good breakfast.

I just spent an hour looking at Oregon coastal real estate. There are some really great Pacific views at good prices (relative to NY, at least.)

The drive between Portland and Tillamook on the coast goes through some beautiful hills and woods .  There's an impressive nature center in the middle of the forest that's worth seeing.

For some strange reason my kid gets carsick on that stretch every time we drive it. We do roadtrips every year through there and it never fails, we have to stop in the first 1/3 for a ralph. But it's the only place that happens.

Hey Bunk - just wondering, how was your meal at the Cannon Beach Pelican? They only had one restaurant until a few years ago, now I think they have at least three. We noticed the Pacific City location was pretty shitty this year and didn't eat, only had a few beers.

One of my kids gets car sick on windy mountain roads and she gets sick on this road too. I think it has to do with the trees being really close on both sides of the road, so she can't look at a further away horizon to stabilize her inner ear on the curves and the odd lighting/shadows probably play a part too.

The Pelican - I had a sausage flatbread pizza the first night that was messy but quite tasty, and a smoked half chicken dinner the next night that was also quite good. Nothing I'd call spectacular, but decent fair.

Best meal I had on the trip was probably the fish tacos at a Cafe/Bakery/Bar in Astoria that the guy in my hotel recommended. But the couple pints of 7+% Georgetown IPA I had may have affected my memory.

The drive from Cannon Beach to McMinnville was fascinating, because I went totally by Google's directions. Saw a whole bunch of windy country roads, but not a lick of traffic.

Fat Head's was a cool place. Didn't eat, I'd already had a good meal at Bridgeport. Basically picked Bridgeport as the pub farthest away I was willing to walk to, and worked my way back from there. According to my phone I walked 5.2 miles that day.

That must have been Lucille. She's the tequila of beers; something about that beer gets me hammered fast. It's one of the best IPAs I've had, but dangerous.

Glad your trip worked out!

And I just finished a pint of Lucille at the yard house in Seattle...

I think i'llo@insurebc.ca switch to something lighter (and stay home for a while)

Strongest thing my local brewer puts out is about 5.5

Astoria for a night, down to Seaside for a few hours, to Cannon Beach for 2 nights, to McMinnville for the afternoon, to Portland for 2 nights.

Then came home, worked 3 days, and went back to Seattle for 2 days of PAX. It was a busy couple weeks.

Sounds like fun. Heart Cannon Beach dearly. Did you eat at Pizza a'Fetta? Pretty sure I would sell a kidney (or maybe a child) to get a local franchise. Best pizza I have ever had.
