Free State of Jones

Saw this tonight and it's not bad. Deserves a better opening weekend than it had and doesn't quite deserve the negative reviews it's receiving. The acting and story were good and engaging, it just needs to be cropped a bit on the time. The director tries to hard to set it up as an epic rather than a drama. The 196? scenes interlaced in the movie didn't need to be in there at all, or should have been set-up better as they occur at weird intervals and don't always make sense.

McConaughey was good as the lead. You believed in the cause and him as Newt Knight. (And looks he amazingly like the real man) It's also nice to see a movie with white Southerners who are anti-Confederacy and anti-slavery as well. While there weren't enough of them the South needs new heroes promoted and this is one man who should stand alongside John Brown as a real hero of the South.

In all I'd give it a 6.5/ 10.
