Steam Goes Nuts, Offers Access To Other People's Accounts

Quote
Steam faced something of a catastrophe this afternoon, giving players across the world access to the personal information in other people’s accounts. It’s not yet clear how this happened, but it’s a doozy. Call it the Steam Winter Fail.

Various players across the world logged into their Steam clients today to find that their homepage displaying Russian or another random language. When they checked the “account info” section of Steam, the digital store showed them another user’s account, complete with e-mail addresses, buying history, and other private information. Merry Christmas!

UPDATE (4:30pm): Valve has shut down the Steam store, presumably until they fix this problem.

UPDATE 2 (6:05pm): Looks like the Steam store is back online. I’ve been able to log in and my information is all correct now. Still no official word from Valve, which is a bit disconcerting.

Yeah, I can't buy a damn thing right now and it doesn't appear as if it's totally taking my account info as me. None of the games I have in my library are showing as in my library when I view their store pages but the library looks fine.

EDIT: Closing Steam and relaunching it seems to have fixed that issue. Now to see if I can buy anything.

EDIT2: Yep, I was able to purchase Football Manager 2016. It must have been a cache issue because my computer had been on all day.

This is not the first time this has happened, but oddly it's the only time I can think of where it's been widely reported, probably because it didn't happen on Christmas last time.

I stayed logged in and was playing on and off all day. Probably since I'd already been logged in this didn't seem to happen for me.
PW reset to be safe though?

Just a reminder to link a phone number to your steam account.

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.

Which would have done you precisely zero good in this situation, as anyone who got access to your cached account info would have been able to see said phone number anyway.

Seems like the access to other accounts was limited, you couldn't actually change anything or purchase anything. However you could see personal details, addresses, and last 4 digits of CC, which is a pretty bad fuck up.

Not only a pretty bad fuckup, but Valve was silent and unapologetic. They deserve to be raked over the coals for this, but won't because Steam's affected user base won't care enough.

People weren't being logged into other people's accounts, they were seeing cached pages belonging to other people. So being logged in all day wouldn't have protected you. Not going to any of your account-related pages for the entire day might have protected you from others seeing your sensitive data but there's no way to know for sure and Valve sure isn't going to fess up about how bad it was.

I was right about not going to any account-related pages protecting you but wrong about Steam about not doing anything as apparently they are going to try and go through the cache servers log files and figure out which pages got incorrectly show to other users and contact the affected users.

Off topic a bit (didn't think it merited it's own thread), but did Steam announce something I missed?  I've suddenly got about 80 games in my download queue with a download size of 0 bytes.

It sounds like a fuckup on Steam's side. If you haven't already, don't do the updates, just restart the steam client. If you have done the updates, it apparently deletes some files so you'll need to do another round of updates that actually redownload the deleted files. Haven't seen anything mega-official about it, but some mods mention that here
