Australian horror film, came out last year. The only kind of horror I like--mostly psychological and suggested. Beautifully directed and acted. Memorable movie. Recommend strongly.

Watched it.  Was not entertained.

This, like The Conjuring, was put forth as being 'good' and 'scary' and was neither.

Bad Film about Mental Illness* was bad.

I saw this on Netflix a couple nights ago and really liked it.  They avoided a lot of modern horror bullshit like jump scares all over the place and tried to focus on actual horrifying things.  Definitely worth a watch.

I thought Babadook wasn't bad, but I think Oculus is a much better example of that type of movie.

I thought this was terrible. If I'm gonna watch someone fall victim to their own brain, I'd rather it play out like The Taking of Deborah Logan.

I always like seeing such contrasting views on a movie in this forum.  "It was like the second comming!"  "It was like AIDS!"   awesome, for real

I've heard nothing but good things about it from people outside this web page, so I'll get around to seeing it someday (I like a good horror movie).

Schild, have you seen It Follows yet?  That's a movie I'm still trying to wrap my head around, about weather I was annoyed at it or genuinely creeped out in a way no movie has managed to do so in a long time.  Interested to hear the view of such a big elitist prick with terrible movie views cinephile as yourself.

If I were to offer a no-spoilers synopsis of The Babadook: it's a low-budget independent horror film about a socially isolated mother dealing with her husband's death and her young son's personality disorder. "Horror" is only a single word in that description. If you like the sound of everything else, you can pretty much ignore that it's a horror movie and go watch the film anyway... the creepy aspects are all relatively mild, existential dread rather than insane gore and sudden loud noises. The central character arc, a mother coming to terms with her son and letting go of his father, is aptly explored.

If the idea of a movie about grief and parenting doesn't sound like your cup of tea, but you're a horror fan... I recommend giving this film a pass.

if at last you do succeed, never try again
