On the one hand, this makes about as much sense to me as "Starcraft: the FPS" or "Doom: the puzzle game".  On the other hand, Minecraft is a HUGE brand, so I can't blame them for finding new ways to exploit it.

Not just brand expansion, but gaming in general.  My kid plays 80% MC and all other games she's not really interested in.  Genre bridging games using the MC content should be successful in transitioning the MC crowd into other game types.

Assuming I was worth a billion plus dollars and wanted to buy a $70M home... I think I'd want one on a reasonably sized island of its own or whatnot.

That house is the anti-me. Even if I had the money he has ( why so serious? ) I would never ever ever ever buy that house. The view in particular is really fun. Dominating over... what? square miles of concrete polluting the horizon until your eyes hurt. I understand that he made enough money to buy ten of these or about a hundred other houses, but this is really more of a Scarface joke than a real place where real people should want to live.

Despite Hollywood memes, California is not actually falling into the ocean.

That's true enough. However, the tiniest bit of rain sends large patches of land towards the ocean quick enough.

Now that he has more money than god, any word on when he'll finish the fucking mod API? This 'mods break every patch, some mods just die when that happens because the creator isn't around' state of affairs is just insane.

'mods break every patch

Isn't that the case with every modded game? I know that many, many mods break every time WoW or KSP update. At least with Minecraft you can still play old versions for as long as you like.

Also, I thought Notch was nothing to do with it any more anyway?

Not only has he not been involved directly in Minecraft, the announcement of the Mojang buyout included the fact that the founders *all* were leaving the company.  Which is notable in that usually even if they're expected to depart, it's arranged that the founding team will hang around for a year or two for a "smooth transition" or at least to decouple a "the founders all bailed!" news cycle from the acquistion news cycle.  Clearly much more of an IP purchase than acquihire situation.

Microsoft has already launched the Windows Phone edition of Minecraft: Pocket Edition. And if everyone who bought a Windows Phone device in 2014 buys it, and pays at least $76/copy, Microsoft will have broken even on their IP acquisition.  swamp poop

I have no idea how people do the mobile version. I love MC so much but that mobile interface just doesn't work for me. Ditto Terraria on a phone.

That's the problem with using a superior version of something for years. Tough to downgrade. I could probably live without mods just to get the fix when I'm oot and aboot, but that interface defeats me every time.

Same, I spent the best part of the last week ill in bed and fired up PE on my 7" Nexus. Lasted about 30 mins before the interface made me feel worse.

I have been waiting for months for a mod-friendly and stable build so I can fire up Minecraft again. I still have a 1.64 version set up, but was hoping to add/change some mods and it is too much fucking work as it is now. If they ever get a real API slapped together it would increase the lifespan of the game another 10 years easily. Hell, they could license it as a $5 add on and create a new revenue stream.

If only we had a server that's been running for months with a good modpack.

That is entirely a matter of opinion. I LOATHE all the modern mods that you all seem to love. I want a fantasy world to adventure in, not a goddamned job running a power plant.

1.7.10 is pretty stable now. The final build of Ars Magica 2 will be out "soon" (a major stability patch was just released), and Thaumcraft keeps getting more content. Toss in Roguelike Dungeons, Ruins, a few that add mobs (Project Zulu? Lots O Mobs? Animals+? Special Mobs?), maybe Blood Magic and/or Botania, and that'll give you a pretty good fantasy world. Witchery has a new beta build (but is awfully fleshed out for a "beta") if you want lower-key magic, and Mystcraft or Twilight Forest (1.7.10 versions don't play nice together w/out some tweaking) can add more dimensions.

Add in fastcraft to help with chunk generation lag (if it's an issue; for some dimension-adding mods it is) and 1.7.10 is at least as good as 1.6.4, IMO.

What modpack/version is the F13 server using, anyway?

I was anti-tech mods until the last iteration of the server when I discovered Applied Energistics. Having all my thousands of items in network storage is one of the best things ever to happen to MC. And thanks to our old buddy Yoru, power generation is pretty simple (seriously, the other best thing to happen to MC).

I favor the adventure and world-building mods, but those also seem to be the buggiest and most likely to be abandoned. Better dungeons, millenaire, there's some great stuff. Also, we still have a couple fantasy mods in, thaumcraft is awesome and roguelike dungeons are cool the first couple times you run them.

I believe the ideal for the f13 pack is to have something for everyone while minimizing the impact if a particular mod isn't your thing (config out the negative effects of thaumcraft, for instance).

Don't hate, participate. We always discuss what mods to put in the next iteration of the server when we start a new world.

Torinak: we always do custom modpacks, I think it's around 103 mods currently. 1.7.10.

Hang on, is Yoru Erogenous Beef? That's awesome. Yoru I love you, you're a genius!  Heart

Also, what Sky said, the mods on the f13 server are pretty varied atm, you can ignore all the tech stuff totally if you want. If/when it comes to starting a new world I'd definitely put in some votes for things like Twilight Forest, Blood Magic and Botania to fantasy-up the mix a bit.
