I'm slightly curious. Disney though...

Conceptually, I'm intrigued.  There was a vision of the present in our past that never came to be, and turning that into a present fantasy story is intriguing.  I do not like Clooney, generally, and the girl in it was a trainwreck the times I've seen her in past stuff... Call me intrigued, but not optimistic.

2020 will be the year I gave up all hope.

Yeah it's a great concept.  It was better when it was William Gibson's The Gernsback Continuum

Brad Bird though.

Brad Bird though.

Now I'm interested.  I rewatch the Family Dog episode of Amazing Stories nearly every year.  The Incredibles is also awesome.

Iron Giant and Incredibles director, and House... Looks fun from the trailer.

Brad Bird is an instant sell for me. He has never done a bad movie, and most of his stuff really works beautifully for me.

Brad Bird is a good director. However, Damn Lindledof is the king of interesting concepts with no payoff and smart people doing incredibly stupid things. (Prometheus anyone?) This movie won't be any different. Thank you Nevermore for saving me from wasting some money.

I want to as well but... Lindleof...

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

but Lindleof films are fun

In the same way that genital stimulation until you're just about ready to climax only to have the other person stop and start washing dishes is fun. The first time it happens you figure it's a little disappointing but it was great until the end. After the sixth time you'd rather not even bother getting started and have a nap or a sandwich.

Nothing about it or the multiple ways it's been sold* intrigued me.

* First it was a mystery sci-fi thriller, then a sci-fi coming of age story. Now it's a sci-fi action movie, if the commercials I saw last week were accurate.

I was dragged to it and it was just ok and personally I wished I had waited on netflix or blu-ray. There were a few parts special effects wise that were ok but the overall story was pretty meh.

Just due to work, not out of any sort of interest in it. Felt pretty dull to me. Would imagine it's a bit slow-paced for kids also.

None of the trailers made me remotely interested in it. Brad Bird being involved is the only thing that makes me interested but not enough to go to the movies for it.

I think it's interesting the number of people claiming:
1. This is Hollywood taking a risk.
2. Numbers go to show Hollywood shouldn't take risks.

I think it's more about poor scripts and directors. And Mad Max is about the ultimate risk I've seen Hollywood take.

Nothing I've seen in the trailers for Tomorrowland make me think "WOW, what a risk!" It looks like a bog standard, feel-good, by-the-numbers young adult sci-fi action movie to me.

I saw the early teasers / trailers and have no idea what the movie is about or why I would want to watch it.

I still don't know anything about the film other than it exists and it's based on some Disney thing.

Wow did this ever bomb. Even with the marketing push behind it it's still behind budget by almost 60 million worldwide.  It barely eeked past Mad Max this week, with it, PP2 and Max earning 14 mil each.

I still don't know anything about the film other than it exists and it's based on some Disney thing.

Seriously.

I have no idea if I want to see it and nor does anyone else I know.  Beyond George Clooney droolers, what's the draw ?  We genuinely have no idea.

These days in Hollywood risk is defined thus:

Low-risk: re-using a popular IP based on something bombastic from your childhood.
Medium-risk: re-using a popular IP that isn't from your childhood.
High-risk: re-using an old, not well known IP.
Insane risk: new IP that is "inspired by" something bombastic from your childhood.
Too risky to contemplate: new IP that isn't bombastic.

Their marketing sucked.  They tried to preserve the surprise, hoping that the anticipation of what it might be would create a viral frenzy... that never materialized.  They needed a trailer that explained the premise 6 months ago and then a splashy trailer a month before release that was full of amazing special effects... Instead they have a girl running in a field...

What makes me more nervous, Bird notwithstanding, are reports from folks I know who say the film is really, really message-driven to a fault. I generally don't like to be lectured by a film period (even if I agree with the lecture) but I especially don't like it when those streams cross over with "big summer entertainment film".
