I'm fascinated with games with this theme but implementation matters so much. Not the bleak theme, but the explore/gather/build/survive theme.

Is there a skill tree or something that one follows to make stuff?

As far as I can tell, there's no way to make stuff.  You can "harvest" materials from things in your inventory.  You get cloth from "harvesting" socks, leather from boots, metal from a crowbar etc.  You then use what you harvested to repair other items because they break down over time and through use.  Repairing items can make last longer and can also improve their effectiveness.  If you repair your can opener you can open more cans and if you repair your sweater, it improves how much warmth it provides.  It looks like theres going to be an option to build a snow shelter in the future so you don't have to find a standing building in order to have shelter.

In The Long Dark there is no "get as far as you can" portion. It's an incredibly bleak, depressing experience where your only goal is to slow your death as much as possible. That's not much of a carrot.

That may be what keeps me from buying this.  Slowing death seems far less fun than thriving under harsh conditions.

That's the problem with many survival games from the last two or three years. They usually justify themselves with the "early access" tag (if you noticed, pretty much all survivals are still in a beta of some sort), but I greatly agree that it wouldn't take much to put in some sort of journal/diary which also work as a way to keep track of your records and, most importantly, your story.

A journal wouldn't be enough. There has to be a carrot. It's part of the core loop of all games. You have to be working towards something. Working towards a slower death isn't compelling, journal or not.

Agreed, there needs to be a wincon even if it's very difficult. I've played DCSS for years off and on despite never getting remotely close to victory; I wouldn't have kept at it if there wasn't an end in sight though.

Being able to build yourself a home where you can sustain under the conditions would be fun.  Like "Jeremiah Johnson - the sim" of sorts.

That's one reason that I play minecraft (although I realize it's not exactly that, and not for everybody).

I'm thinking of Don't Starve, which is hard as fuck IMO but does let you gradually tech up and explore and feel like you're making progress toward something (right until you fuck up and get eaten by a tentacle monster or something).

Yes, it's another favorite of mine. I keep dying around the end of the first winter though. I'm not getting over that hump anytime soon, apparently.

That's the game that made me start avoiding early access. I played it (and several others, Terraria and Starbound come to mind) a ton and burned out on them way before much of the content was released.

This is on sale on Steam and I finally picked it up.

I will try not to go all fanboi but it's hard because this is, based on my perky tastes, one of the games I've always dreamt about.

I am not telling anybody to get it because it is EARLY ACCESS, and what is possibly the most important part, the Story Mode, is still missing. But WOW. Not that I've ever been stranded on a mountain, but I think they nailed down what I'd imagine being lost in a northern wood to freeze to death like nothing else ever. Because of the lack of a story mode, there's still not enough game-given goals, but if you get in the appropriate mood, surviving the first night feels like you won the world cup. Voice acting could be much better here and there but overall I like that you get to hear yourself mumbling your concerns and fears to yourself.

Very well done. If you are looking for a zombie-less and pvp-less survival, this feels amazing. Also, wait for full release and story mode.

Yeah, this is my game, pretty much. I know you're surprised.

Glad the fixed teh wolf spawn thing, my first day ended after 8 hours or so when I came out of a cabin I had ducked into to ditch the wolf that was stalking me and when I came out a full pack jumped me.

Is it me or you can't use neither the hatchet nor the knife to defend yourself from wolves? Seems like you can't equip them in your hand, only use them for wood or meat harvesting.

I've played two games thus far.

First time was going pretty well, spawned in by the ranger station. Between that and all the lake huts, I would've been jamming if I had known what I was doing. Since I didn't, and a lone wolf had been stalking me, I left the last cabin to get swarmed by a wolf pack.

Second game I spawned in the logged woods, no shelter in site. Start to jog around, avoiding wolves but one got me down to 7% before I punched him off me; one flare later he's run off. Leaving a trail of blood, I just start running to find some kind of shelter/supplies. Nothing for a long time, now I'm freezing. I run up the spiral path to the overlook, arriving completely parched, winded, freezing and bleeding.

Bandage up, drink the single can of soda (hope nobody needed that) get a fire going in the stove and lie down to rest and let my wounds heal. I die of thirst in my sleep.

Necro.

The long awaited "Story Mode" is coming in a couple of months. As usual these days, it will come in episodic form with each episode being 3-4 hours long. Another good news is the introduction of the "journal" some of us were asking for. In the meantime, they changed lots of things and added a ton more.

Here's a trailer for the story.

I shelled out for this loving it so far. This is a small account of my third run.

Day 1 I wake up in the Trappers cabin find a hunting rifle mounted to the wall complete with shells. I spend a week trapping rabbits and collecting wood, just barely scraping by. I manage to snare a few rabbits, but find their meat goes rancid very quickly. A handful of meat decays while I sleep. On Day 3 I figure out how to load the rifle and I give it a good clean with a kit I found under a shelf. Maybe I can shoot an Elk. Damn they are fast, I need to figure out how not to alert them.

Day 8 I head down to my snare to see if I have caught anymore rabbits but I seem to have attracted a larger angrier foe. The bear snorts and growls, I stand my ground and lift my rifle. I blast a nice shot smack into his sternum but he stands up on his hinds beats his chest before charging me. I get one more shot into him but he's now on top of me, he rips me up bad I'm pinned and unable to fight back. I play dead, I nearly am, he gets bored and wanders off. Bleeding heavily now and badly wounded I lay out some wood, pour on some fire accelerant and light a fire, everything is blurry. With my last ounce of strength I bandage up, eat some cooked rabbit meat and take a drink before I pass out for a few hours. I wake up untouched by the bear who was five metres from me, very groggy and sore. Relieved when I see the bears hulking body lifeless beside me. I carve out some bear meat and make a bee-line for the cabin.

Day 14 I camped up in the ravine after hunting an Elk and downing him with a headshot, I cut up 9kgs of fresh meat, what a haul! I rest up inside a nook for a couple of hours after cooking some meat. Then as night is approaching I immediately head back for the hydro dam to cook up the rest of my prize and catch some z's. When I arrive at the dam I soon realise in all the excitement I forgot to pack my bedroll, nooo. Panic sets in, night has fallen now but I need to go back as I'm literally exhausted. I light up a flare and wander back to the spot where I left my prize possession. After a four hour search of the ravine, in pitch dark, I stumble back to the Hydro dam hypothermic and passing out with exhaustion I lie down for a bit, conscience is fading my thoughts focus on the fact that I have used my last match...

New update yesterday, and it seems really cool. More sandbox stuff to play with and overall improvements, and an interesting challenge mode. Especially the one that sounds like a remake of Steven Spielberg's Duel, with a bear instead of a truck.

I managed to last 40 days, I decided to test out the mountaineering rope on the ravine basin. Didn't realise how far down I went til I reached the bottom, only useful item I found at the bottom was the distress pistol. My first attempt to escape was a complete failure, barely made it ⅔s of the way before falling back down.

Rested up for the night tried to kill some rabbits running around the ice but my arrows missed and got stuck up in a tree, distress pistol didn't help either. The next morning had nothing but a few cat tail stalks to regain some strength for a final throw of the dice. I dropped all my non-essential items and a few semi-useful ones to about 9kg load and tried again, made it one metre from the top only to fall back down in a broken crumpled mess. Rolled up on my bedroll for a final time.

Went for another go, got 23 days in and had every item of clothing but I stupidly tried to tackle 3 wolves on the lake. I was only equipped with a bunch of decoy meat a bow and 3 arrows. Dumb thing was I had a fully loaded rifle back in the Camp Office but didn't want to waste ammo.

Bought this on the Steam sale - for $6, I figured why not.

Fuck this game is hard. Actually, the biggest problem I'm finding is something to drink. Is there really no option for picking up some goddamn snow and melting it for water? I mean, you're fucking surrounded by the shit. I realize you wouldn't want to just grab any old snow close to the ground, but when it's ankle deep, you can probably scrape off the top layer and get some potable water. Other than that, I like it so far. I've done like 4 deaths worth and lasted almost 2 days on one of those deaths.

You need to light a fire first to melt it and then it's good to boil it so you don't get sick.

You need to use fire on water in order to prevent hypothermia. You don't ever drink snow unless you want to die in that environment. If you can't warm it up, it kills you faster than thirst.

Mmm I think you are supposed to always have snow. As long as you are by a stove/fire (indoor) you'll always have the option to melt snow.

Yeah, I googled it and realized that it's one of the options on the fire menu. They really need to work on the new player hand-holding experience.  why so serious?

I'm enjoying it way more than I should, though.

This is on 50% off on Steam atm. Picked it up. Agree that it badly needs more to it than just "don't die".

Really? I don't know much about these things. Even wolves actually starved to death?

yeah, wolves are pretty anti-threatening. they attempt to avoid humans at all costs. you could walk past a set of active wolf dens wearing raw meat and it would not get you any closer to being killed.

the only way to create a real wolf problem is to be dealing with a wolf-dog hybrid (those can be aggressive) or the wolf has to be dying of rabies

Most predators don't want to get injured, because an injury can mean an inability to hunt, which starts a downward spiral. I once had the piss scared out of me by a mountain lion; Hiking along in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, hear this sound that can not be described (like the one 40 seconds in), and look over to realize I have startled a ginormous cat that was sunning itself on a rock. It stares at me for a few seconds while I rehearse the exact sequence of actions it will take to take my backpack off, open it, and get the pistol I have in there, but when I slap the chest buckle and yank it off my shoulders, it jumps...the other way, disappearing into the treeline before my pack even hits the ground.

It was unbelievably fast, if it had jumped for me instead of away, I would have been lunch. I wound up needing the pack open anyway, I hadn't noticed that I had pissed myself when it shrieked. I wasn't being metaphorical or hyperbolic, it literally scared the piss out of me.
