I forgot to share that one. Hits hard, I play a LOT of ZZ Top on bass. The Top kinda gets brushed under the rug as 'the guys with beards and the car' but they have a rich history of not only authentic and modern blues, but pushing the sound of the blues, especially during the new wave era. They got weird, and it was awesome. They're seen as a 'simple band' but could wring more out of three chords than most bands get out of their entire careers, with a style and authenticity that is almost unheard of in popular music (and honestly, every musician I've played with that dismisses the Top as simple cannot play with that level of style and groove, they tend to be widdly widdly technique guys, with no soul). Few bands had the level of showmanship with such a paucity of props or theatrics, just old school showmen who know how to entertain a crowd.

Carl Levin, one of the few truly great and honest Senators of the last 75 years (retired in 2013, represented Michigan), dead at 87. Kind of feels like we won't be seeing his like again any time soon. All the folks who want someone who can make deals and be a pragmatist, he was your guy; all the folks who want someone driven by really strong political values who was uncompromising and persistent about the things that mattered, he was your guy. Also a deeply honest person and a huge defender of greater transparency, etc.

I played some Stones in my rocksmith set last night, closed with Dead Flowers and it felt perfect. He's a fun drummer to play with.

That man started with the Stones in 1963... a drummer in a band that is older than I am. Incredible.
And on a less serious note, shocked he went before Jagger. I would say Richards too, but we all know he's a lich so that point is moot.

I saw them just a couple years ago and despite being an outdoor stadium, it was one of the best sounding concerts I've ever attended (and I've been to so damned many, and many in really well-tuned venues where I also know the sweet spots to sit).

Well Richards has been clean and sober for years. He just does interviews with a whiskey glass full of Iced Tea to keep up the hard drinking hard man image.

I think it's just because he drank it all and there's nothing left but iced tea.

As I've learned more musically, I've come to appreciate the shit out of Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman. Neither of them were what you'd call super flashy, but their foundation basically enabled Richards and Jones/Taylor to do whatever the fuck they wanted knowing that the song would just keep humming along with or without them. Honestly, I don't think either guitarist was technically a genius and if you separated their parts from the whole, they'd be pedestrian and repetitive... except there was always that driving force that underpinned the whole thing, and their guitar parts always hit the emotional spots of the songs just perfectly.

A high level of technical skill is highly overrated. Guys who can run scales and modes at a million mph are a dime a dozen. Just takes time sitting in your bedroom practicing. Being able to communicate through your instrument and make people feel emotions, or paint a picture with sound. That's the trick. That's not to say technique isn't important, at least to the level of craft that can deliver said emotions without your lack of skill messing it up!

We rewatched some Asner clips last night, mostly from Mary Tyler Moore. He was fucking genius in terms of timing and nailing the character beats. "I hate spunk!" is just one of the best scenes ever on TV.
He and Bob Hoskins should have been in a shirtless knife fight in some weird movie about Russian gladiators, though.

Damn. One of my comedy heroes.
He wasn’t really a people person, but he knew how to tell jokes like no one else.

Norm was an under appreciated genius. Saw some quote today to the effect of 'you could always tell who the dipshits in the room were, they were the ones that never laughed at Norm's jokes'. Feels about right.

Did you ever see his roast of Bob Saget? It was the epitome of that; most of the audience seemed to be uncertain whether to chuckle or not while the comedians were losing it.

I think that's more it--the comedians really liked him both as a person and as a comic--I think he was sometimes something of an inside joke, in that sense.

I also think part of why comedians liked him is because so much of his humor played with bombing, and turning that around to get a laugh. He danced in places that terrified them.

RIP LOWTAX https://youtu.be/2UkcZ4LtSE8Edit: I have been sitting for hours debating whether or not to disclose this, and I feel like it's something I do need to get off of my chest. Frankly, I'm tried of being quiet. I've mostly had to stay quiet for years about things happening behind the scenes. I've held things inside so long and so hard my chest physically hurt the same way it is now.
I considered not sharing this out of respect for Rich's parents and sister, but after thinking on the incredibly vitriolic wall of text Rich's Mother sent to me this morning, saying upon many other things, that his blood is on my hands, I need to share it to regain some sense of control over what's taken place in the past 48 hours.
Yesterday I recieved a divorce ruling that would help me and my daughter stay in our home in Canada and allow me to provide a good life for her as well as pay back numerous debts that had accrued during the past two years when I was receiving $350 a month in child support.
In the divorce ruling the judge found that Rich had willfully spent down the martial fund, confirmed his treatment of me was Domestic Violence and put together a plan to pay for the attorney fees etc. He would still retain custody settled on previously in mediation. He was due to get our daughter for Christmas.
An hour later I was contacted by my attorney who informed me that Rich had shot himself earlier in the morning.
So. There it is. His other ex and I got to tell our children that their father died without saying goodbye to them, or that he loved them, or to my knowledge, left a note for them.
If you've made it this far thank you for giving me space to let this go so I know longer have to hold onto it.
