Still not nearly as bad as his brother though.

Yup I've been listening to him since I was like 15. I only got to see him live once in in a surprisingly small venue in San Francisco in the mid '80s. He's still on my normal play list and I'll miss him.

11 years older than me. Makes sense. He was highly affected by Vietnam and I was too young (and in the wrong country) to have to worry about it.

This one hit the fiancee pretty hard, she's the folkie. I don't mind some folks music, but it's not really my jam. However, when I saw Prine's picture, I realized I've seen and enjoyed him in the past (with her). The best of any genre always rises above genre and is just enjoyable to watch.

Mathematician John Conway, best known - to his chagrin - for his cellular automata Life, has passed away at 82. Not a bad run, but sad to see him go nevertheless.

Also British comic and broadcaster Tim Brooke-Taylor. Original member of The Goodies, a surreal british sketch show when surreal British sketch shows were still a new thing, and a regular on the cult radio show I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

Died of coronavirus related issues at 79.

I was always a big Dennehy fan. Didn't hurt that he reminded me of my dad, but he was also a very good actor, and seemed to have a good sense of humor.

I am both saddened and amazed that he keeps getting referred to the “actor from Tommy Boy”

Because, well, Tommy Boy was actually awesome.

I think the Tommy Boy thing stuck because he played the endearing dad role which made him out to be the lovable good guy father. I also remember him as the asshole sheriff in First Blood but I despised his character there. Cocoon wasn't my thing but I do remember he was in it...

F/X is what I remember him being in.

I also remember him getting unbelievable reviews for his role in the Goodman Theatre's production of Long Days Journey Into Night when I was living/working in the Chicago theatre scene.

Dennehy was great in pretty much everything but his tour-de-force (at least in movies as his Death of a Salesman on stage is legendary) in my opinion is in a weird Peter Greenaway movie from the 80s called The Belly of an Architect.  If you can find it I recommend it highly if you are into arty stuff.  Great soundtrack by Wim Mertens.

I don't know why his death surprised me. Probably because I didn't realize he was 90. Hell, he was gray-haired when I started watching football.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/06/world/florian-schneider-kraftwerk-music-intl/index.html

Florian Schneider passed away from cancer. I know there is not a huge following for electronic music here... but Kraftwerk was pretty huge to lay the groundwork for a lot of electronic music with threads in synthpop and 90s industrial. Got turned onto these guys late in high school but meeting my buddy in college was when I started to understand their influence.

I think it is not that people don't know/respect bands like Kraftwerk.

It is more that the Cookie Monster Death Metal cultists have so drowned out any conversation about other types of music that we all gave up years ago discussing music on the forums  why so serious?

Without Kraftwerk a lot of the music of the last 40 years would have been very different, if it existed at all.

RIP

I plan on performing the 'stop short' in his honor. My fiancee is rightly convinced I'm the love child of Frank Costanza and Fred Sanford.

Jerry Sloan, Utah Jazz Coach for so many years, has passed.  There are few NBA coaches that really jump out to me for what they did.  He kept that team competitive year after year in such a challenging market.

2020 will be the year I gave up all hope.
