No doubt there are some statistics out there to prove or dis-prove it, but helicopters have always struck me as an absurdly dangerous form of transportation and I could never fathom why people would routinely use them.

They have a relatively high crash rate compared to fixed-wing aircraft on a per/hour basis. Only been on one once and it felt like I was on the razor's edge of death the entire time, so ya.

From the current information it appears whoever was piloting was “scud running”. That’s when flying visually you keep flying closer and closer to the ground to avoid bad weather closing in. Eventually the pilot attempted to turn around but impacted the ground.
This is quite common for novice or poor pilots. I can only guess Kobe was flying or he was pushing his professional pilot to get through the weather.

Oh yeah, he was problematic for sure in that regard, but he also touched several areas of physics, mathematics, and gave us the Dyson sphere/shell, which is a concept I've always been sort of enamored with.

James Lipton is out, at 93.
I always liked Inside the Actors Studio, and he had a great run. Still, fuck cancer though.

Freeman Dyson was a very interesting man with an amazing imagination and curiosity. Regarding climate change, I think claiming he was a denier is a silly misrepresentation of his actual words, yet he would have loved it as a poke in the eye of fanatical unquestioning believers of everything doom and gloom. I say that as a reluctant and questioning believer of much of the climate doom and gloom desperately hanging on to a few shreds of hope. On the other hand, it did hit just shy of 70 degrees in Antarctica a couple weeks ago, and that was not a crazy fluke but a well-telegraphed progression we could see coming for years. I also think with climate change, as with Dyson spheres and poverty and genetically altered trees growing on comets, that he was a dreamer who found the extreme limits of what might be theoretically possible far more interesting than the realities of what is practical or reasonably achievable by imperfect humans and institutions. Which is neither entirely a bad nor a good perspective. Striving for the impossible can lead you to achieve the improbable, or it can lead you to failing miserably and missing out on achieving the reasonable.

Dyson was an oddball; I respect his thinking at the fringe of things but being an oddball isn't defense against being a total shit or freak, as it sometimes has been for male scientists of his generation and type.
Lipton was kind of a hilarious sycophant. Like, such an asskisser that it became a sort of art in its own right, and kind of awesome.

Yeah, Dyson was odd and a bit of a contrarian, but not outrageously nor obnoxiously so, though I think he was under-pessimistic about climate. At least he was no Harlan Ellison.

Fuck. Flash Gordon was one of my childhood favorite movies. He was also in What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams. I'll remember him fondly.

He was in 2 of my favorite 80s Sci-fis, Flash Gordon and Dune. (Yeah, I know, a lot of people dislike David Lynch's Dune but I enjoy it!) He's one of those rare actors who seemed to bring a gravitas to any role he was in, even if the entire rest of the movie was shit. He reminded me of Morgan Freeman in that way. Both of them just have an aura about them that forces you to pay attention.

Didn't realize he was in Dune, but its been decades since I've watched that movie.
He was in so many things I've enjoyed its not even funny to list them. World seems a little darker with his passing. Rest in peace.

We're getting a bit into the weeds here, but Paul Kasmin just passed away. If you're at all attached to the art world, this is a little staggering. I have no clue if it was corona, the site says he had a long period of illness. Anyway. Yeah.
