Suicide is catching lately, and I am not happy with this development.

And it seems to just go straight downhill once you get to the age where you health is questionable at best. Gotta say if I found out I had some sort of terminal illness I would be sorely tempted to end it early rather than let my family watch me suffer while I bankrupt them due to our wonderful for profit health care system.

I think it's funny how people view somebody else's decline but can rarely put themselves in their shoes. I used to think it was selfish but after staring into the mental health abyss before pulling away from the edge, I can see how people give up.

Anthony Bourdain was found dead of apparent suicide this morning.
That really sucks.

Anthony Bourdain was an amazing guy. In a media world full of not so great celebrity chefs, he stood out by freely admitting that he was at best mediocre in his cooking skills. What he was good at was being a celebrity, and he wasn't a bad writer to boot.

His Kitchens Confidential is, among several things, an insightful dive into the psychology of those drawn/trapped in the restaurant business. It's an odd institution, and it tends to promote a lifestyle as unhealthy as it is compelling to those vulnerable to it.

A bit of disclosure: I've been involved with food service from dish bitch to owner/operator for pretty much all my adult life and so I've seen most of its ends and outs, and Anthony Bourdain was one of the only writers I've read honest about how it all worked.

I'm actually going to miss him.

Don't do anything drastic!

And I'll miss Bourdain, too.  I really liked him a lot.  :(

I would put him in the almost-major celebrity category. I will miss him. I strongly suspect that people who knew him well will soon be telling us that this was not that surprising. You can see some hint of it in his New Yorker profile from last year.

Bourdain was absolutely a major celebrity.  No Reservations was nominated for like 12 Emmy awards or some shit and won 2.

On that note, I'm getting pretty tired of celebrities who easily have access to the best help in the world and don't seek it. Particularly celebrities I like. Bourdain goes in the same bucket as Hoffman and Ledger :(

Heard about Bourdain this morning.  :(

I'll miss his unique voice - he was such a fantastic storyteller.  Apparently Eric Ripert was the one to find him in his hotel room, which had to be just awful.

They were running No Reservations all weekend on Travel Channel. Made me realize how that's likely the best travel show ever created.

Surprised I haven't seen any Harabe related memes related to this.  I remember her meeting Mr. Rodgers and Robin Williams and she really seemed to enjoy their company.  Plus her cats.

I doubt anyone but Sky and I will care, but Vinnie Paul, co-founder of Pantera dead at 54.

I cared. Hate that he went out so young and hope it wasn't something drug related or foul play like Dimebag.

I care, too.  Both of them gone way too young.  I must have seen them 3 or 4 times between 1992 and 1993.  I think twice with Skid Row.  I don't remember if I went late or arrived early to avoid Skid Row.  Between Pantera, Slayer and Megadeth, the late 80s and early 90s kept me really busy.  Plus, since I worked in artist management, almost everything was freeeeeee!

But yeah, I'm sad today.

Damn, when I first started reading science fiction Harlan Ellison was considered the hotheaded young firebrand of the genre.

I read a lot of his work when I was younger and I thought he had a few great works and a lot of try hard new wave garbage.  It seemed like he coasted a lot on his Star Trek work, but as I saw him at conventions and read his opinion pieces I came to recognize that he was more a giant of science fiction by force of personality rather than by sheer literary merit.

He also wrote a lot of forgettable stories using tropes and situations that were in common use, the sued anybody who used said tropes and situations ever again for plagiarism. He was science fiction's premier copywrite troll, I'll give him that.

This poster acknowledges the works of Harlan Ellison.

He was a professional asshole.  That was his whole schtick.  He was science fiction's prima donna author who was famous for being a prima donna author.  Did he write or create anything after 1980 that wasn't a cash in on his reputation?

RIP, you loudmouthed asshole.

I knew he was going to be going out pretty soon. I didn't read his initial run on Doctor Strange until much later, but the character was the one that got me into comics in the first place, and remains my favorite hero.

Former pro wrestler Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart has died at the age of 63.  He was probably best known for teaming Bret "Hitman" Hart as the Hart Foundation in the 80's and for his daughter Natalya being successful with WWE for the past 10 years.
