Art Bell dead at 72.  Sweet travels to the Land of Nod you goofy weirdo.
His show was always entertaining for overnight road trips through the 90s. Goofy, crazy, paranoid, but fun.

Quote
Statement from R. Lee Ermey's long time manager, Bill Rogin:

It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey ("The Gunny") passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us. It is a terrible loss that nobody was prepared for. He has meant so much to so many people. And, it is extremely difficult to truly quantify all of the great things this man has selflessly done for, and on behalf of, our many men and women in uniform. He has also contributed many iconic and indelible characters on film that will live on forever. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman of Full Metal Jacket fame was a hard and principled man. The real R. Lee Ermey was a family man, and a kind and gentle soul. He was generous to everyone around him. And, he especially cared deeply for others in need.

There is a quote made famous in Full Metal Jacket. It's actually the Riflemen's Creed. "This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine."

There are many Gunny's, but this one was OURS. And, we will honor his memory with hope and kindness. Please support your men and women in uniform. That's what he wanted most of all.

Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed.

Dale Winton. Anyone who watched any amount of British daytime TV back in the 90s would have spent a lot of that time watching Dale Winton.

Died age 34, fuck cancer.

It would be easy to be cruelly glib about his death given his public persona and "controversial" views. On the other hand I wish gaming had a obit culture that was a bit more nuanced than "don't speak ill of the dead". He wasn't just a "game critic" or "outspoken".

Yes. Love him or loath him (I've done a fair bit of both over the years) the man was an extremely important voice in, and advocate for gaming over. He achieved a hell of a lot in his 34 years. May he rest in peace.

Man, 34 is way too young to die.

He could be kind of salty at times but he did do some positive things wrt gaming.  He highlighted a lot of indie games from the beginning of his career, which is something not a lot of other people were doing at the time.  He was also was one of the few people that did a detailed analysis of the in game settings (keybindings, mouse sensitivity, resolution etc) .  It often let you know right away if a game was just a lazy port.
