Omar Sharif passed away today at age 83.

There's too many cool old dudes dying lately.

This makes me very sad.  Dr. Zhavago is one of my favorites. His appearance in Top Secret just goes to show how cool he was.

Going back to Patrick McNee, his obituaries indicated that he'd lived a pretty damn interesting life before being cast as Steed, and that he didn't stop after that.

"His father was a racehorse trainer, a diminutive man known as 'Shrimp' Macnee whose dapper wardrobe his son later recreated for Steed. He had a taste for gin and enlivened his dinner parties by levelling a shotgun at those guests he suspected of pacifist tendencies.

Macnee’s mother took refuge in a circle of friends that included Tallulah Bankhead and the madam Mrs Meyrick, before absconding with a wealthy lesbian, Evelyn. Young Patrick was brought up by the pair and was instructed to call Evelyn 'Uncle'. He managed to resist their efforts to dress him as a girl, wearing a kilt as a compromise. His father fled to India, from where he was later expelled for urinating off a balcony on to the heads of the Raj’s elite, gathered below for a race-meeting.

Evelyn financed Macnee’s education, at Summer Fields — where he first acted, playing opposite Christopher Lee — and then Eton. His corruption began when he was introduced to whisky by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cardiff, who had escaped into the garden with a bottle when brought in to consecrate Evelyn’s private chapel. Macnee was then expelled from Eton for running a pornography and bookmaking empire."

RIP Rowdy Roddy Piper.  Time to kick ass and/or chew bubblegum in the ether.

61 is really not that young for someone who participated in such a physically taxing profession and likely snorted a large portion of the produce of Columbia up his nose.

But he was always a fun guy to watch, RIP.

Gutted. RRP was far and away my favorite wrestler of all time. I saw 'They Live' in the theater specifically to see him in it. Saw him in a wrestling event in the Tacoma Dome in my teens as well. I was really enjoying his Twitter presence- he was connecting with fans and other celebrities, and really seemed to be enjoying his place in the cultural zeitgeist. RIP indeed  Heartbreak

Rob Thielke died from his battle with cancer. He was the face of Vern Fonk insurance, and has done some of the wackier, almost always hilarious, commercials in tv history. Those of you not from the Northwest probably have no idea who this dude is, but you should check him out.

Oliver Sacks died too.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

James Earl Jones is not dead, before anyone falls for the thing passing around (not that he'd qualify as a lesser celebrity).

Of interest to probably only myself: Type designer and typographer Adrian Frutiger passed away last week.

His typeface Frutiger, originally designed for the signage at the Charles de Gaulle Airport, was one of two sans serif designs* that inspired the typeface I designed that got me my job at Adobe.

* The other was Syntax by Hans Meier. Both are notably "humanist" sans serif designs which, among other characteristics, have proportions similar to traditional serif book foots instead of the "grotesk" proportions of sans serif fonts like Helevtica.

Don't anything about him, but props to you. I always thought you were like... an old bearded UNIX programmer for some reason (don't ask why). Not a typeface artist.

Maybe you're both.

While he might be best noted for his 'words of wisdom,' as an actual ball player, there isn't anyone else who has been to and won more World Series than him, IIRC. 10 championships in I think 14 tries? Plus he went off to the European Theater in WWII. Hell of a life that sorta gets lost in the 'did you hear what he said' schtick.
