Not so! The experimental massive mode comes with the free version and goes up to 8. 8 is pretty insane. We have folks on ios and android and rarely crash out.
We were having trouble with someone crapping out with a variety of devices of various ages. We saw the "Spacerats" message many times. But it's so quick to restart, that it was never really an issue. Though when someone fails to connect correctly right at the beginning, it's entertaining because someone's "I'm ready" graphic will go off in a limp arc with predictably juvenile results.
I believe it's much improved. Crashing is very rare for us even with tons of folks. There does seem to be some issue with initially connecting but quitting out and trying again a couple times quickly gets the game going.
