I have not tried those particular ones, but I have tried some large public servers. I don't like them because of the griefing and well, the people. I've had better luck with smaller public servers.
OhGaming.org has had well-run public minecraft servers that I have played in the past. They have differently-themed modpacks (wild west, organized crime, and so on) but I haven't played lately. However, they are competent at running servers and don't put up with any nonsense. (Their packs are found on technic.)
