Does it run on Linux? I've recently discovered the joys of DigitalOcean (running my Hex image server from it) so I can setup another server through there.

What platforms will I be able to play Starbound on?

Starbound currently supports Windows, Mac, and Linux at both beta and full release. Dedicated server software for these operating systems is available with the game as well. Post-release, we’d love to work on porting the game to other platforms, including the PlayStation 4.

So, I guess? Maybe Steam has to be running?

Edit: Does this help? http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/dedicated-linux-server.35351/ or this: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/server-multiplayer-guides.34000/

It runs on Linux (64bit and 32bit) just fine.  I ran a server on a Google Compute n1-standard-1 instance for a couple weeks for some friends.  We didn't really stress it (beyond 3-4 players at once).  It burns about 500MB resident base and another 100MB or so per active player and/or world.  Also one thread per active world.  It was rather memory leaky when I last tried it.

Basically you just need to copy the assets directory and the linux-64 or linux-32 directory, tweak the config files (server password, etc), and run the start server script.

I've seen various complaints about reliability for DIgitalOcean, but *damn* they are crazy cheap (like roughly half the price of Linode for similar instances, at least from the CPU/ram POV).

Yeah I looked at both Linode and DigitalOcean when shopping for a VPS to host the Hex images on. I definitely got the sense that DO was growing too fast when reading the reviews but they are the new hotness at the moment so I figured I'd give them a try.

On a Starbound related note: I can't get past the character creation screen -- I'm enjoying the piano music too much while I setup another "droplet" to setup the game server on.

Still another day or two before patch release:

I... would put a password on it. You can give it to me and people can message me on Steam if they really want it. Also, looks like the patch was delayed until tomorrow. POOP.

My first post launch character is a robot named HUMAN RESOURCES. My home planet is basically perfect and it had Pulse Jump on it. I feel like I'm cheating.

It's okay I plan on resetting the starter planet on a regular basis so new people don't get stuck with no resources.

Do we all have the same starter planet?  My group started on the shittiest hell hole I can imagine.  A lava biome (digging through magmarock with matter manipulators, great) with frequent meteor strikes ("hey guys, I just got a base camp set up for AAAAAAARGH") infested by legions of monsters (not the least of which are these goddamn moosebear things that like to cluster in groups of 3 or 4 around the entrance to our mine) and the actual valuable metals are rare as hell.  Ugh.

On the up side, there was a Glitch vendor selling wizard hats.

Is there a cap on the number of people who can play on any given server? Or the f13 one?

I meant the server starter planet. Every account/server has a different starter planet. But in multiplayer everyone starts on the same one.

Edit: Falc, don't even know, they took out grouping atm.

Yeah, looks like. I just logged onto the f13 server and found someone's extensive mine works down into the flesh biome :)  I'll pop on later and put some weapons in a crate near the beam-down point.

Cause I was going to ask into the f13 server but I have no idea how active I will be so I was wondering if that would take a slot (or resources) that someone else could use more consistently, or it doesn't matter.

f13 server is currently set at 12 for max players. Depending on how much memory that uses I may adjust that amount. Server has 2 GB of RAM.

Wipe your universe and start over. Need a full universe wipe to have it generate a new random starter world location. I think there's a way to change the starter world too but I haven't gotten very far in learning all the server config params yet.

That was a frustration I had running a starbound server -- there were daily or near-daily updates to the client causing everyone to constantly pester me to update the server.
