Having only lived in Phoenix for 8 years, I did manage to go to The Mason Jar a number of times to see bands both good and awful. While never "the place to be" it was always a good time and a decent spot to see both has-beens and never-will-bes. Mason Jar closed for remodeling, will reopen as gay barLarry Rodgers The Arizona Republic Mar. 2, 2005 12:00 AM The Mason Jar, a bastion of hard rock, punk and, more recently, hip-hop in Phoenix for more than two decades, has temporarily closed for remodeling and will reopen as a gay bar, according to the owner of the property. Franco Gagliano owns the building but sold the Mason Jar name and business to others five years ago. He says the operator of a Central corridor gay bar that is being relocated due to construction on Phoenix's light-rail system has bought the business from current owner Mike Manfredi and has signed a five-year lease. "They are redoing everything inside and plan to open in about two months," Gagliano said Tuesday. The Mason Jar, 2302 E. Indian School Road, was the center of the Valley's hair-metal scene in its '80s heyday and has hosted such national artists as Soundgarden, Dishwalla and Slash over the years. |

One of the clubs in Richmond VA closed and reopened as a gay bar. They drink more, tip better, are clean, and tend to not fuck up the place no matter how hard the band is. Basically, it's a better environment, even for heteros. Punk really hasn't been the same since the 80s/90s anyway. Operation Ivy was the last punk band (that I cared about) and immediately after their demise Green Day managed to pee on punk's grave. Their new album is pretty nice though and I'll admit, even with the new singer I enjoy Misfits shows and reunions of older bands, even if they aren't at the same shitty venue I saw them at originally.

We call them Juke Joints in Mississippi, and yes, they are all over the South. Generally, the farther away from a "city" you get, the more you'll find. The amount of sawdust on the floor will increase exponentially as well.

Man Hole? Ugh -- a most unfabulous name for a gay bar. I doubt it.
And don't fall for the stereotype too quickly -- certain kinds of gay bars are cleaner, but there are plenty I wouldn't step into unless the lights were well lit -- they tend to look and smell like any other "local watering hole", at least here in Houston. And hey, Houston has the BRB -- Brazos River Bend -- a honky-tonk *and* a gay bar in one! Who'dathunk!?

Wait wait, there are gay people in Texas? I'm dead serious. This is something I thought was a total impossibility. That may explain the "certain kinds" comment in your post. Every single REMOTELY gay bar on the eastern seaboard is about 10x cleaner than it's hetero counterpart. Hell, on goth night, the shitty punk bars around here are cleaner because guaranteed at least half of them are gay. Sure they're wearing ball gags, but they're clean about it.
And Man Hole, I do believe is a Wayne's World 2 reference. Or was that the Tool Box? Or was that in Family Guy? Fucking pop culture.

Hell, there are gay people in Mississippi. And there used to be a gay bar downtown, that a friend-girl even dragged me to once. It was my first real exposure to drag queens.
I still think trying to be gay in this state (or Texas) is asking for trouble, but /meh. You gotta get your freak on sometime.

The Montrose District in Houston is a large gay community. You do realize that 3 of the top 10 biggest cities in the US are in Texas? Lots of gay people in Texas. However, it is very low as a percentage of the overall population.
