Wow( no pun intended).

Openings for lead game designer are a bit unusual, aren't they? If you're Blizzard, can't you get the pick of the litter? Are they just that thin on qualified internal candidates?

I wonder how many "resumes" they get for the Game Designer positions from l33t d00dz who dropped out of high school to spend their time roXXoring their game.

I'm sure it's common for game companies to get flooded with applicants who spent 1000 hours playing Grand Theft Auto 3 and think that qualifies them to know how to design games.

Um, never mind.

I emailed and asked if it was possible to get the Oracle job and work from the computer on my fridge.  They said no.  When will these companies realise that there is no reason at all to work from an office in their own building?  It is very short-sighted of an alledgedly cutting edge company involved in providing products for consumers living on the global intrawebs.  Sheesh... once you set up the damn database there's nothing to do but snack and take naps in the crapper, anyway.

More than that, have you worked in the industry recently?  Monolithic applications like a MMOG need a TON of performance tweaking, monitoring and reporting.  Other entities that make use of a lot of small to moderate projects need DBAs as authorities from a design perspective, both hardware and software.  We have 2 DBAs for SQL (and more for legacy), and it wouldn't hurt to get a third.  No shortage of things for them to do.

You are forgetting or ignoring the importance of actually getting to know the people one works with and the importance of new employees gelling with the culture of an organization.

The uber-guild mentality has pretty much destroyed most of what I like about MMOG's, so I don't think they're top-notch anything.  I doubt very much they contributed anything meaningful than playtesting whatever would happen when certain game mechanics came into contact with catasses.  I'm skeptical of their input into "design" beyond that.

Call it cockblocking, l33tness, whatever ... they are guys who are selfish enough to play games for the sole purpose of ruining others' fun.  Or perhaps more accurately, ruining others' fun is fun for them.  Wish I'd never heard of 'em.

Oh they are not only ruining the fun of others but their own as well.

I have been trying for nearly two days now to get a pickup group for the deadmines or Mo'grosh Keep to do the elite quests there, so far to no avail. Asking in general or looking for groups will yield meager results (usually just one or two players) but when you stand at the entrance of one of those instances you will see dozens of people running in and out of there. Hell there were nearly thirty people in Mo'grosh  alone camping mobs.

So I wondered why there were so many people doing these kinds of quest but nobody was looking for a group. While watching them I not only realized that there were only guilds doing those quests but also that for the most part a Level 40+ Guild Member was pulling those people throught the instance. The typical group setup was something like one or two Level 40+++ and two or three Level 18 - 20 standing around and watching while those two slaughtered everything around. You see they want to do Molten Core and the other Raid-Instances so they do not have the time for their guildmates to reach 60 on their own. So for the better part of the game those poor sods have seen nothing more like rushing through instances while Level 40++ did all the work. Sounds fun eh?

When I reach 60 I have actually learned how to play my rogue and seen (and enjoyed) most of the World. Well it might take me till May to get that far but at least I had fun doing it.

So in my humble opinion überguilds == ruining the fun in games since 1996.

I wonder what happens when the casuals like me realize that they have become obsolete when reaching 60 since every instance at that Level pretty much requires Guilds and Raid groups to win?

They could be alts.  I've helped a couple guild alts through some instances in order to get a quest item hella early.

I'm not a 'casual' and I have this problem.  That's why I don't raid.  I find that I can still kick ass without the gear.  It really only provides maybe a 10% advantage if that.

I seriously doubt that. I am playing on an european server and the game has been released on February 11 over here so most guilds are still recruiting and there are only three people who have already reached the Level Cap on the german servers.
