Legendary game developer and Austin billionaire Richard Garriott is unloading some of his prized possessions in an auction next weekend.

Pieces that Garriott is parting with includes his collection of antique and modern automatons — toys that can be wound up or plugged in — orreries, a replica of a Wells Fargo & Co. stagecoach, a model of the 1903 Tsiolkovsky space rocket and a working Model T car.

So why is Garriott selling the items?

"He's moved his main residence to New York, married a beautiful woman and now has a child," auctioneer Chris Featherston told KVUE-TV.

The auction will be held Sept. 21 at the Austin Auction Gallery beginning at 10 a.m.

What I meant to say was, I hope he really likes New York and sees no reason to ever be in Austin again. Also, that woman isn't a gold digger, she's clearly doing god's work.

Nope. That is going to come in very handy when she leaves him...

Dear lord, he has to be the worst gold digger target ever.  If history is any indication if they split up he will immediately file a law suit against her for making him sell all his prized possessions.

Yeah, I'm gonna guess "gold digger".  Based solely on the look in her eyes.

Although prioritizing "go to space" ahead of "find trophy wife" does add somewhat to his geek cred.

It's true.  I've never, ever, ever seen anyone poor who can manage to bag a pretty young girl with daddy issues.

Considering there's articles and sites dedicated to it, there's certainly a competitive aspect.

It's not something you want to start investigating if you don't want to get exceedingly misogynistic. The book, "Smart Women Marry for Money" is only the tip of the iceberg here.

Seriously though, it's Garriot. GARRIOT.  We get to make fun of anything he does.  Forever.

He sold Origin to EA. I'm sure he got a pretty penny for that alone.

That, plus his dad was an electrical engineer and PHd as well as an astronaut.  He had means before selling his first game, which netted him $150k in 1979 dollars.  It's easier to be rich when you haven't spent the first half your life accruing debt to paid-off in the 2nd half.

I am not informed enough to know where F13's grudges against people like Garriot and Molyneux comes from. But at least they are old school enough to be humans, which one can mock for their vanity space flights and vanity thophy wives. And project one's hate on.

With things like EA and Ubisot I am not even sure who I'd be supposed to shoot in a theoretical "2 weeks to live and scores to settle" scenario.  Ohhhhh, I see.

While a lot of folks just hate some people like Garriott for how their companies turned out or how their beloved games became crap. My personal disgust with him stems from my being somewhat embedded in Austin gaming culture. Something I've partially removed myself from recently. The sort of rampant nepotism and entitlement along with massive over-confidence in Austin should tell you a lot based on how many good games the city has released in the last decade (hint, count how many fingers you have on your hands, it's less than that, even if you chop off a few).

For a one-trick pony, he sure milked it into an eccentric filled limelighted lifetime.

That tends to be the goal when you're a two-trick pony. The second trick should've been convincing the world you never existed though - he failed on that part.
