Kids. Apparently parents freak out about 3D for their childs eyes, and kids break hinges.
Really not much to this story other than the maybe the extra sku angle.
This is the real exploitation that Nintendo pretty much said themselves (even though most articles are ignoring that). It's also no coincidence that new Pokemon is being announced (released?) at the same time of the 2DS announcement.

I can understand it slightly more kid safe design without a hinge and frankly I use the 3d feature pretty rarely or have it to a very low level so I can see saving 50-60 bucks if one does not care about the 3d feature.

They have to put a warning on the 3D system that kids under a certain age shouldn't use it, that's enough to make a parent not buy it, even if the kid is above that age.
