There is something worth preserving still, but I no longer think the NCAA are the right organization to do it. I could even see letting them remain and just doing all the non-money sports, which they've done a fine job with over the years and do a lot of good for both their institutions and the students who get opportunities through them. Football, and to a lesser extent men's basketball are the problem children.

I'm not sure at this point you need to have someone really govern the lesser sports the way the NCAA does though.

Other than establishing which set of rules you want for your sport, the rest of what the NCAA does for the smaller sports is meaningless in this day and age. The whole reason it was formed in the first place was to stop horrific injury and death to the football players.

Establish a championship, agree amongst the conferences to play it, game over.

SEC won't participate in EA game

Those that know better, does this impact things more than the NCAA thing?

The NCAA is trying like hell to settle this thing. I'm hoping upon hope that the people involved tell them to go fuck themselves and go for the big score.

What power does a student-athlete have?  Can they even vote or own property?

I think their vote counts 1/4 of a real citizen.

I expect it probably means the game gets cancelled.

Apparently the PAC-12 and Big 10 are doing the same thing. Each member school in the conferences are free to license their brands, but the conferences themselves won't allow their brands. So USC could be in the game in a conference called The California Conference but it won't have the PAC-12 logos.

If we were talking about a real gaming company intersted in making fun games rather than Evil, Inc., then the solution would be obvious.  Release the game with generic teams but open it up to player modding. Leagues, schedules, names, logos, uniforms, faces, everything.  What licensed properties (or naked cheerleader skins) players add to their game in the comfort of their home is then not the publisher's problem.  But, seeing as this is EA and there is no way for them to monetize that kind of fun, there is no way they will allow their customers to HAVE that kind of fun.

Sure, because most teams aren't already Tigers.
