Backed it on kickstarter. It would be fine if it were just a one time purchase and you got all the cards, but it's got a CCG pricing scheme, and for that money, it feels highly lacking.
It's lane combat with a mildly interesting card-leveling gimmick. It has none of the depth of a traditional TCG. Every turn you get a new hand of five cards, play two of them, and your creatures attack any enemy creature in their lane, or the opponent if they're unblocked. Whenever you play something, a higher leveled version of it goes to the graveyard to be eventually reshuffled into your hand. If that sounds worth 20$ to you, bearing in mind that you'll still need to spend money on additional cards above and beyond that, knock yourself out.

I wasn't a kickstarter but - yeah it's not so hot. I found Duel of Champions pretty decent in the pre-Hex interregnum.

I like Solforge, but their pricing is significantly out of wack. I kick started for a fair amount because I trust the designers thanks to Ascension, so received a fair amount of packs but still don't have anywhere near a set. The number of legendary ultra-rare cards is significantly above normal for these games (18% of the first set compared to 6% for a magic set), and you can buy a full 4 card set for Magic for significantly cheaper than a 3 card set of Solforge.
I would say its better than Duel of the Champions though. It has, like Ascension, more depth to it than first meets the eye and isn't so wildly unbalanced as Duel is.

HATED this game as far as I took it, which was not far. It seems shallow as fuck, kiss of death for a CCG. Also no form of limited play is not smart.

Anyone playing this currently? I'm having a great time with it currently. I came to it from Ascension, which I've had tons of fun with. It repulsing the MtG/Hex crowd is a major positive sign in my book, since to me any game that requires significant time/money invested is incompatible with my life priorities.

It repulsed the MTG crowd because it was bad. It had nothing to do with time/money investment. A game can still be good without those things.

Funny, I've read lots of experienced/pro MTG players praising it heavily recently. Have you looked at it since the most recent expansion came out?

MTG Pros fucking love Kibler. Also they thrive on being overly nice. They don't want to look like the rest of the MTG community. Yes, I've seen pros praise it. No, I don't believe them.

What's your main objection (or is there an article out there by someone that shares your objections)? The game seems plenty deep with a ton of room for meta, ingame strategery, and new mechanics. The way they're doing drafts/dailies seems a lot friendlier to new players than Hex or Hearthstone. The four factions each have really great starting identity and means to expand.

Bump to announce that Set 4 of SolForge is absolutely amazing. The game has a huge amount of depth and high skill ceiling these days, draft is vibrant and the constructed meta is very dynamic, life is pretty grand. If you haven't checked out SolForge (or only checked out the fairly vanilla Set 1), now is definitely the time to hop in.
The new 'Sharing' system is a huge leap forward for digital TCGs, too -- when you get 'unbound' copies of a card, and you can split them into two functionally identical 'bound' copies, one for you, one for a friend. It's like trading, except you don't lose your original card. You can also forge 4 cards of a given rarity into another card of your choice in that same rarity, which has the nice effect of setting an upper limit on the price value of any card and attracting players who are here for the game, not for the 'investment'. Extremely player-friendly.

Bump because set 4.1 dropped today, and it's got some excellent new tools that should further diversify an already very vibrant meta.
Also, a new pricing scheme for the .1 sets (which are generally used to give new tools to underserved playstyles) -- long story short, you can F2P the cards at your leisure, but $30 will get you a complete set. Combined with the introduction of Card Sharing in set 4, this radically alters the game's level of expected financial commitment downward -- I'm a decent player with a completed account sets 1-4 and I've spent maybe 250 tops now, and I've got friends who've invested more F2P time who've either been talented enough to complete an account for free or have mixed time and money to complete an account for under 100.
