So, my 3DSXL came with a stylus.  Old news.  But!  And this is something that has nagged me for awhile dating back to my DS - I stumbled across one of those game cases that holds multiple carts, and it also held 7 different stylus (styluses?  styli?).  Who the fuck needs more than one stylus?  As far as I can tell they're all the same, and I've seen online and in stores where you can buy packs of extra styluses.  What's going on here?  Are people losing these things left and right?  Do they break?  Are there different kinds and sizes?  I'm very confused how this is a "thing."  In search of rational explanation pwrease.

My kid loses hers at a rate of 1 per month.  It doesn't matter how many times I tell her to keep an eye on it.

Yes you lose them. The tips can also wear out. On the losing part most annoying are the games that have some things that are easier to do with the stylus like inputting text or selecting things but you don't use it all the time (i.e. mostly you use the pads and buttons). So you either have to keep taking it in and out of the slot or putting it somewhere nearby so you can pick it up from there. But then you forget you put it there and poof it's gone.

For games like that, I just hold it between two fingers and play with it in my hand. Etrian Odyssey is what taught me that habit I believe, since it's played with equal parts buttons and stylus.
