Channel 4 in the UK started showing this a couple of weeks ago and it's fantastic. It's supposedly a zombie thriller but it's more about what happens when the dead come back to life. It's very intelligent, intriguing and original (or at least I don't recall seeing anything like it before). Also, it's French.

I have no idea. I think the only one of my friends who prefers dubbed stuff to subtitles is Canadian.

I thought real otaku learned Japanese and looked down on dabblers that needed subtitles.  Whatever, it's cartoons.

I have to admit that although I really like the premise of the show I'm not even going to bother to look at it with subtitles.

Caught ten minutes of this the other day and was immediately interested, but I've missed some shit at the start, so I'll get it all and give it a rewatch.

It's not all of us. Several of my favorite films I would only watch subtitled - Delicatessen, Le pacte des loups, anything by Kurosawa. Even Crouching Tiger was painful dubbed, and most of the voices were done by the same actors.

Good plan. It is currently available on 4OD as well but 4OD isn't a patch on iPlayer unfortunately.

The only thing I've ever watched dubbed, except for Ponyo and The Secret World of Arrietty with my daughter.

On a side note, Mogwai did the soundtrack for this series and it's pretty awesome.

French series showing in the US on the Sundance Channel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Returned

The dead come back to life but not at all as zombies.

I found the first episode deeply moving. It's visually stunning. It reminded me emotionally of the film "The Sweet Hereafter" in some ways, but that's just because the dominant story thread of the first episode involves an event that's very similar to the key centerpiece of that film.

Very much hooked.

This is so good.  Why can't we have more great twisted stuff like this?  After 4 episodes I have serious concerns about where they're hinting that they're taking the supernatural part of the show though.

Where can I watch this other than on cable Sundance Channel?  Can't find it on Hulu and everything is else is streaming clips.

Edit: Looks like iTunes is the only legal one.

According to this interview with Fabrice Gobert, they were hoping to shoot Season 2 around about now and are planning for a third. If my (extremely rusty) French serves me right, he mentions in the video that he sees the story being told over 3 "movements" and this season was just the beginning.

In this article, he talks a little more about the ending but only in so much that they realised 8 episodes wasn't going to be enough to answer all the questions they'd asked (lit. "to shut all the doors that had opened.") Season 2 is going to be a continuation with most, if not all, the same characters.

I am open to correction from more native speakers.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Just watched the first episode of the english remake of this.  It's pretty much scene for scene, line for line copy of the french version from what I am remembering.

That's too bad, because the first 6 episodes or so of the French version are so damn good.
