In my day we mashed keys against every wall until our fingers bled just incase there was a secret door AND WE LIKED IT!

Actually I pretty much still do that, sadly.

10 Year old can't play Bro-Shooter #3000? Why not?

Because Bro-Shooter is dumb.  Really, though, my son somehow has a magical high-brow taste in games although my wife is predictably against him playing realistic violent games.  Just yesterday he downloaded a GameBoy (yes, black-and-white) Mario game on his 3DS and was having a great time with it, even pointing out levels that he had seen in one of his Nintendo magazines.

He's not typical, though. awesome, for real

When I was 10 I was playing Bro Shooter 1 & 2 (Wolfenstein and Doom).

Ohhhhh, I see.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

I won't let my kids play shooters because the graphics are too realistic these days.  Am I just being a Dad or is that a valid reason?  A headshot at 1080p is a lot different than a pixelated Nazi killing.

I have never played WoW.

So rumor has it that today MS is going to announce they're backpedaling on DRM and always online.

By not allowing kids to play games they want to play, you're not only making them more desirable, you're making it a "taboo" thing in your household.

Basically, you're making it cool.

Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today.

What does this mean?

    No more always online requirement
The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
    Authentication is no longer necessary
An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
    Region locks have been dropped

Bearing in mind that Giant Bomb pretty much never ever posts rumors.

I imagine that if this is true, then Microsoft probably saw the writing on the wall. Between the lackluster preorder numbers and the very real problems they're having with their chipsets coming out of the factories, they chose to try and get some consumer goodwill back before they'd inevitably crater in November.

Edit: And confirmed:

Fuck em anyway. Bowing to the pressure when the alternative is complete ruin doesn't make me more likely to trust them. What about in a year when they have all their sales? What's to stop them from changing policies when they finally get the initial money?

This. Even if they hadn't shat the bed with their insane requirements (including the Kinect shit), I still saw nothing in there which made me think I needed this new generation of consoles. The most impressive XBone game I saw was Forza 5 and I still haven't gotten halfway through Forza fucking 2.

I actually preferred the model they had before, from a selfish point of view. The previous family sharing arrangement would have been pretty handy, and I give 0 shits about reselling games and would rather not have to swap discs.

Edit: page is finally working:

http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update

News page on xbox.com is still fucking broken. Here's the text, apparently (copied from somewhere else):

Quote
Statement from Don Mattrick, President, Interactive Entertainment Business:

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.

Honestly, at this point, they're screwed even if they do fix it.  They've already gone and pumped out all the old facts to a large audience, so at this point there's going to be a ton of misinformation between now and release, of their own making.  Congratulations guys!

So, pretty much business as usual?

The previous family sharing arrangement would have been pretty handy, and I give 0 shits about reselling games and would rather not have to swap discs.

That is something I realized too. The reselling aspect only concerned me because I like renting games on occasion.

Interesting.  This actually pushed them to making all of their games totally digital as well.  I didn't see, but is Sony doing that for the PS4, or is it disc only?  At least they were wise enough to drastically change rather than double down on stupidity.  This might actually save them this gen.  Of course my record of never having bought an Xbox will remain unbroken anyways.

However, you still need an internet connection to make the Xbone work when you first plug it in, correct?

They'll recover. The PS3 ended up finally not being a disaster after being an enormous clusterfuck for a long time at the start (mostly due to pricing), I don't really see why this won't be able to have at least that decent of an arc. If anything they have more time to fix their image before release.

Depends on the amount of damage control ad money they have to front in order to recover the lost goodwill.

Won't purchase.  Don't trust 'em.  Don't care.

There are far too many good games out there on mobile, PC/Steam, iOS, and *other* consoles that makes this squirming just irrelevant.   They don't know better and they won't learn.

For them to do this means they have some hard data on the impact it was having on sales.

Which is a giant FU to the people who spent the last week apologising and defending MS and saying it was just a vocal minority of Internet gamers.

And also a giant FU to every person who said you needed it for the amazing power of the cloud. So turns it the cloud wasn't powering the AI in Titanfall after all - who would have guessed?

Nothing about this change anything about games that require online.
