Sooo yeah.. Umm...

Warner Bros. Pictures has successfully rolled the saving throw necessary to reboot a film franchise based on Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson's iconic role playing game Dungeons & Dragons. Deadline reports that David Leslie Johnson (Wrath of the Titans) will be providing the screenplay.

First adapted for the small screen as an animated television series in 1983, Dungeons & Dragon hit theaters with a 2000 live-action version directed by Courtney Solomon. The film was neither a critical nor financial success, but it did lead to a telefilm sequel with 2005's Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God and a direct-to-DVD followup with Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness in 2012.

Johnson's screenplay is said to have started its existence as an adaptation of Gygax and Jeff Perren's Chainmail, a 1971 game that preceded D&D. With the rights to the more famous game now at Warner, the script is being rewritten to encompass the broader and more well-known fantasy universe.

We don't need any more movies made based on games, even P&P ones like D&D.  I remember watching some of that movie with Jeremy Irons.  Lets not do that again.

I would at least prefer a Drizzt/forgotten Realms movie or Dragonlance than some generic one.  At least use one of your IP's that can draw in more than just D&D geeks.

A D&D movie is just a LOTR movie. There's really nothing distinctive about D&D from a narrative or character standpoint.

Once Peter Jackson is through with The Hobbit, the LotR series will probably clock in at over 24 hours.  I'm just saying, the bar is already pretty close.

The Book of Vile Darkness? Seriously?

Have you tried the internet? It's made out of millions of people missing the point of everything and then getting angry about it

I don't even want to think about what a direct-to-DVD D&D film with that subtitle might be like. Might as well call it Dungeons and Dragons: Manos' Hands of Fate

We recorded the last two D&D movies when they were on syfy. A pitcher of martinis was enough to make the Dragon one at least amusing to watch, but there's no amount of alcohol or drugs in the world capable of making Vile Darkness amusing even in a campy way.

I have no idea why they haven't made movies of the Drizzt stuff. I gather its simple enough stuff that would translate to a film and should have a huge following. I wonder if the book rights are different.

If you can read this, you're on a board populated by misogynist assholes.

I know it is asking too much, but just pick a module and do it right.  Tomb of Fucking Horrors, for example.

Puns aside; they have.  It's called "The Raid: Redemption."  Just a different theme obviously.
I think you've hit it though.  A simple crawler done right would capture the essence perfectly.

That said, I'd still like a DLance redux as well as a Spelljammer epic.

God that fucking thing just swallows EVERYONE.

That game was actually pretty fun once all the fan-made patches were applied. Wish someone would give some of the other old modules the same treatment.

TOEE could be doable in movie form. Village of Homlett, Search For The Lost Temple, and Champions Of The Abyss. There's your trilogy.

The thief in the second movie was pretty cool. I liked the way he handled the guys at the beginning that backed out on their agreement. And the "disarming" of the trap in the hall of lasers scene was funny too.

If you watch them like they are made for TV movies, you can understand the budget and limitations. I haven't seen the third one, but the first two have a very Hercules or Xena feel to them.

A Tomb of Horrors movie would be terrible. Anyone who thinks otherwise is welcome to jump into my avatar.

Seriously, there'd be like 2 action sequences in the whole thing, the rest of it would be like watching Nick Cage do his "I AM THINKING ABOUT HOW TO SOLVE THIS PUZZLE" acting from National Treasure for 2 hours.

That coupled with a Saw knockoff as the various party members meet graphically gruesome deaths.

That's pretty much my first thought as well.  The only thing stopping LotR from qualifying as D&D movies is that Gandalf never used Magic Missile.  I'd probably have enjoyed them more if they were just done that way without trying to do the LotR story.

Fellowship of the Ring is essentially the best D&D adventure EVER.

The recent book Throne of the Crescent Moon is a good example of what a pretty good D&D story could be like. Which is to say, not particularly filmable as an ordinary movie, maybe as a really good animated film in a niche format.

I honestly hope they do Dragonlance. If only to help erase the animated atrocity from my mind.

'Dungeons and Dragons' is a terrible idea for a movie. There's no story to D&D. There's campaigns and modules and occasionally some fairly shitty novels that have little to do with the actual game.

I mean, what's next, Battleship, The Movie?

Line set.

One of the great sessions of my D&D life was in that module. Had a battle with like 40 gnolls; my buddy and I spent about an hour setting up miniatures for every single monster and character. Then I cast fireball the first turn and killed about a third of them  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

You guys are thinking too small.  "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks" would make a perfect JJ Abrams movie.

Weird-ass clues that lead nowhere - check
Big CGI-able critter in the middle for a chase scene - check
and at the end when the party gets tossed back into daylight ... LENSFLARE.
