That mouse looks as if it could kill me. I'm pretty sure it was designed by Skynet to do just that.

I just looked at your RAT 7 and it looks huge, mean, and like a transformer transforming in to something that's gonna hurt me. It is kind of evil cool looking though. Is it as huge as it looks? I can't hold a giant mouse. Maybe I should go to a shop and look at some.
I say "look" too much. :(

It looks awesome if not a wee bit over-engineered.

The Logitech Performance MX is the best one I've used recently. Works on almost any surface.

It looks awesome if not a wee bit over-engineered. Oh it's ridiculously over-engineered. But the ability to lengthen or shorten the wrist-rest to become the perfectly length to rest your thumb comfortably on the thumb-kickstand is not to be overlooked. Along with the weights and positioning of the buttons, it's just an amazing piece of hardware.

I had a previous gen MX. Loved the mouse, hated the spotty wireless (about 10' from the receiver).

I'm still willing to live with a wire. Having to deal with receiver issues or a dying battery at the wrong moment would make me crabby.

I have an old Logitech G5, which is nicest mouse I've ever used. The shape is perfect for my hand, it's got a few removable weights, a really nice wheel, a long cloth-covered cable and a single thumb button. They've not made it for a while now so I am afeared of the day it finally breaks or becomes too filthy to use any more.
X2 on this. I've been using my G5 for, oh, 6 years now I think? For me the biggest issue for mice isn't the buttons, but does the shape & weight fit my hand.

Same. Until they make wireless stuff that recharges itself automatically I am fine with wired. I even play with my Xbox controllers connected to the charging wire most of the time.

Batteries didn't bother me, just the reception. That's why I switched over to the wired mouse. I have a powered USB hublet under the coffee table, so I just plug the mouse into that.
Actually, I forgot it's not 10' to the receiver. It was just a couple three feet when I got the hub mounted to the table. Still crap reception.

I use a Mionix Naos 5000 I got on sale about two years ago. Main thing I like about it is the left side and thumbrest area. The way it's molded feels very comfortable when I grip it. http://mionix.net/products/naos-5000/

I have a Naga. A full keypad on the side is overkill. I suspect everyone either has fingers too large to use it at all or too short to reach all the buttons. I ended up programming about half them and used it in EQ2 and WoW, and it was fantastic for healing, but the last time I played either was like 3 years ago and the extra buttons just haven't been worth setting up.
When it dies I might try the hex or I might just go with something with two buttons.

Logitech G9 is fairly small. Low profile and feels kind of chubby. The thumb buttons, eventhough they are there, are placed out of the way of the thumb and are fairly tough to depress. I don't imagine it's very comfortable if you palm the mouse, but if you like me only use the fingertips, it's one of few mice with a short enough body to give good control. The (optional) flywheel scroll is terribly addictive to have. Logitech, so it naturally lasts a lifetime. http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-910-000173-G9-Laser-Mouse/dp/B000UHE8Y2

I have a G9 (I've used pretty much all of the high end wired Logitech mice at some point) and don't like it that much. Even in its narrowest configuration it's a bit too wide for me and I have big hands. It's also not put together all that well (something some of the newer Logitech designs like the G700 suffer from). For example the outer shell has some play in it so when I squeeze the side I can feel it compress. The mouse wheel is also too low for my tastes.

I had one of those too, hated both the mouse and wireless. Receiver was only 6" away from the mouse but no matter what I did if I had to start using it there was at least a 500ms delay before the mouse would start moving. Crabby doesn't begin to describe how I felt when dying in a raid or somesuch because my mouse lagged when trying to do something. I refuse to use wireless mice to this day. I use a Microsoft Comfort Optical 3000. My MX 310 stopped working on 2 buttons some years back and they didn't make it anymore, so I bought the cheapest minimal button mouse that actually had a wire.

I have been using a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical (4 button symmetrical + wheel) for 12 years now and love it for general use. Sure, it is not some uber high end gaming mouse, but I don't really game super seriously anymore and even when I did, it was more than functional enough for what I need. It also is the right size for my hand which I have not found a gaming mouse that I can say the same for.
I am mucho sad that MS no longer makes them.

Along with the weights and positioning of the buttons, it's just an amazing piece of hardware. I couldn't agree more. Friend of mine loves his with all th e weights in, I couldn't get comfortable with it and removed all of them. I've got the palm rest as far back as I can get it, with the tallest version of it, pinkie rest etc, and it's just wonderfully accurate in every way, unlike the MX518 I used to have which, for some reason, decided to continually do the wrong thing when I used the mousewheel, like scrolling in the wrong direction randomly etc. Literally the only thing which annoys me about the RAT7 is the fact that cathair fucks up the laser, so it'll suddenly stop going up/down. It's quickly fixed by just swiping the underside, but that's the only downside I've found so far.

Naga Hex seemed like a reasonable compromise between the 'too many buttons' of the full Naga and not enough buttons of simple mice. It was eye-opening, and the center peg is a rubbery resting point for your thumb in the central position of the hexagonal button arrangement - easy to recenter without looking down.
6 extra buttons is plenty for many games, and it really cuts down on hand travel when you are running mouse+keyboard. The cloudy-online only configuration software sucks however, this will be my last Razer due to that. I don't want a forced update loop or network connection just to use my mouse, thanks.
I bought a Naga Hex a month or so ago it's much better than the over priced PoS mamba I had a few years back. I wish Razor would start adding the free wheel scrolling mode that the Logitechs have and of course the option to go wireless when not gaming would be pretty sweet. I still prefer the Logitech performance mx for general use but the Naga is quite a bit better for gaming.

Razer Naga Epic user here. Great mouse, but two issues: 1) Seems Razer mice have an reputation to start double-clicking due to defect buttons. My previous Naga (normal) died to this (about 3 years usage), after doing some research I found out its actually quite common. Said to myself "No more Razer" but couldn't find any other mouse with enough buttons, so ended up buying another Naga. 2) Razer Synapse, the combined UI/driver of all newer Razer mice. Piece of crap. The wireless mode of my Naga is unusable due to this: In wireless mode synapse freezes every few hours, making the mouse unresponsive. Requires unplugging and back in to get going again. Not using Synapse reliably fixes that issue, but also disables any macros, profile switching, special bindings. Etc. Using the mouse in cable mode helps too, thats what I am doing now. Anyone who played Secret World with me might remember my "mouse died brb under table!" that seemed to happen in instances always... Overall I feel a bit like a sucker for still buying Razer, but am too addicted to the sidebuttons. Its 4 rows of 3 buttons each, for me only 3 rows are comfortably reachable at the same time (without changing mousgrip) but it's still awesome, especially in mmos. People with longer fingers might get even more use out of it ˆˆ

Hrm, actually, I have noticed the odd doubleclick from the RAT7. I hope that's not an omen of things to come.

I had similar problems with the naga though I didnt have a wireless so not the same problems. But, if you like the keypad side button layout check out the Logitech G600. Way less problems, much better software. Or you can check out the Corsair Vengeance M90 though I'm still hoping someone will have some experiences with it before I try one.

The reviews on that site list quite a few major problems. I always take online reviews with a generous helping of salt but if patterns emerge then they're probably true. This thread motivated me to look around for some great reviews and found this suprising entry from a group I had never heard of. I would typically be put off by its low price but like minded people who bought it rave about it. Tried to buy it to see for myself but it doesn't ship to Canada. It looks like exactly what I want, a "palm" style with a few, but not too many, thumb buttons and good software. Those rats look amazing but the company behind them, mad catz, is primarly known for making broken garabage and the reviews have an awful lot of horror stories about it breaking and there being no warranty support. Since I can't get that anker mouse I'll probably stick with logitech and go for this (also highly rated) mouse. I would love a third thumb button but guess I won't be getting one. Reading reviews there is a disturbing tendency for people to get all defensive/offensive about mice manufacturers, it's probably the same people who engage in console wars. Especially with razer, people either love or hate hate hate them.

Everything else out there is just a bit too chunky for me. Annoyingly, you have to flip the G9x over to toggle between flywheel and click scrolling (the button for that is on the bottom).

That's what I have but I'm having trouble with all the buttons. I think I can get used to the side buttons, but I'm really having trouble with that pinky button. I was thinking of returning it for something else... hence this thread... but my sister's dog chewed up the box so now I don't know what I'll do. Even on sale it was kind of pricey. Nothing is ever simple any more.

I too swear by this mouse. There are still tons available on eBay at various prices.

So I take it you are writing off the 18 positive scores and 78 average review score as paid shill reviews because 5 ppl gave it bad reviews?? Definately a pattern emerging there.
