I identify with Gary more than I am comfortable with.

TRUTH. I had a hard time dealing with how familiar it all felt.

It definitely hit me on a personal level much more than any of Wright's other movies have.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something. We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

I saw this last night with the wife. Given that it was only receiving 4 showings a day at my theatre in its first week I figured it was a now or never thing.
So, I think it fits solidly between Hot Fuzz and Shaun. I found Shaun much more entertaining than I did HF because I didn't buy the over-the-top do-gooder that was Nick Angel. He was too cartoonish and buffonish to be real while Shaun was a believable character.
Gary King was totally believable as a character, but I echoed the sentiment of his friends far too much. I just felt sad for the guy and it was with a bitter humor that you laughed at him, not with him.
I also felt the friends were way too far afield from real characters. Like Nick Angel they were cartoons of what people *think* we turn in to at middle-age. Since the framework of the story didn't hang off them so they weren't the detriment they could have been, but they were just distracting more often than not.
I don't see the need to spoiler your reaction, Surly. It's the foundation of the movie, after all.

I wouldn't agree with that assessment. To me it was more "We may be fuckups but that is our right to fail. If we don't fail we can't learn on our own" The second part of course being inferred.

Right, they outright said the first half. I always interpret that sentiment as, "Don't judge me, I'm going my own way." Mainly because the folks using my line are often failures. We can't all be Bill Watterson.
The "if we don't fail..." doesn't fit at all because Gary didn't have that moment of clarity. He ends the movie as he started, regressing not just himself but all of us.
Because he's a colossal douche.

I think he does have a moment of clarity near the end when he comes out to his friend and explains honestly how his life has been, how this is all he has. He may not understand where to go forward but we definitely see his lowest point.

Hot Fuzz is still my favorite of the three, mostly because of the extended cast. Really liked this one though.

Just realized this movie has no release date for Poland.

Everyone forgot Poland. When was the last time you heard a Polish joke?

A guy in a bar leans over to the guy next to him and says, "Wanna hear a Polack joke?" The guy next to him replies, "Well, before you tell that joke, you should know something. I'm 6' tall, 200 lbs. and I'm Polish. The guy sitting next to me is 6'2" tall, weighs 225, and he's Polish. The fella next to him is 6'5" tall, weighs 250, and he's Polish. Now, you still wanna tell that joke?" The first guy says, "Nah, I don't want to have to explain it three times."
