Has anoyne here been to see Constantine? And if so, what did you think of the trailer for A Scanner Darkly. If the entire movie is done in the same style, it could set a fairly interesting precident. The first ever, full length, Cell Shaded motion picture..... Here is a link with some shots of the trailer, still trying to find an actual full length trailer capture.

Winona Ryder.
Anyways, it's not the first cell shaded motion picture. Check out Waking Life. Same director.

My bad then.
For those who haven't seen it, it's definitely worth checking out though. No Winona unfortunately, but I'd still consider Waking Life one of the best films made in recent years.

I found it to be truer to horror than most horror movies. But I've popped at least 50 hits of acid in my lifetime -- some of the most unlikely things scare the shit out of me.

I found it positively unbearable. And stupid. Unbearable, I can see. But stupid? Um, very very very much no. I can see how Waking Life might be a tough sit, but it's one of the most un-stupid movies made in the last five years, at least. It's one of my favorites, but I wouldn't force anyone else to watch it unless they were in the proper philosophical frame of mind.

Um, never mind.

I can discuss the philosophy of it fine. But every line was delivered, by what sounded like a piece of cardboard. As such, it all just sounded a lot more stupid than it actually was.
Films are about presentation a LOT moreso than games. I can sit through bad voicing in a game. Movie? No, thanks.

I could see that, I suppose. I always thought Linklater's dialogue style to be kind of Mamet-like. Though Mamet is less heady and more to the point (but some consider him unbearable as well. Me? I can't get enough of it).

I like Linklater a lot, I just had nothing but distaste for Waking Life. It wasn't his fault. It was the actors' faults.

That looks kind of good. I wish it wasn't a cartoon. (I know, I know... I'm so very out of it)

It didn't elicit hatred or lots of interest, but I'll probably catch in on DVD when it comes out.

Anymore word on this Scanner Darkly thing? What is it? It's intriquing. As well, I wonder, if it and Sin City are successful arer we going to see a slew of imitators?

If it's an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel, it will suck because they are unfilmable (see: Paycheck). If they only base the movie's story on the novel, pick what they want and go their own way otherwise, it can be cool (see Blade Runner (Do androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), Total Recall (We Will Remember It For You, Wholesale)). That said, a true-to-the-book adaptation of The Man in the High Castle might not suck. But it would be outlawed in Germany. :)

I enjoyed Paycheck, slightly more than Total Recall though not as much as Bladerunner. (Which is a movie that bores me in some ways but I find impossible not to finish once I start it.)
Ok. So it's based on a Philip K. Dick novel. That gives me an idea of what to exect.

If you're just talking about the esoteric side of PKD being unfilmable, all I can say is that half of the stuff Richard Linklater has already done falls in that category (see Slacker and Waking Life). If anyone can translate those kind of ideas well, it's him.

Is it just me or has Keanu gotten close to every movie with even a touch of sci-fi literacy about it post blade runner? I was much more interested in the hitchikers's trailer than scanner darkly. Keanu can barely act physically; when reduced to mostly dialogue he approaches quickly zero...
BTW, Constantinue was ok, but I though the characterization of the devil was just terrible. 9th circle of bleh. Took one of the potentially most interesting characters in the whole mythos and made his a clueless fop who gets conned by a mortal.

I didn't think the flick was super great or anything, but there were some things I really liked about it: I thought Keanu was "good" for a change! Tilda Swinton (though Gabriel was a bit underused). Peter Stormware: As simple as it is, I don't think I've ever seen Satan characterized as a pervert. Heh. I've seen seen enough (what I'd like to call) slick "Gordon Gecko" versions of Satan to get a little tired of that by now. Stormware was different at least.
