Soo I just saw Ted and thought it was well worth the money.  Plus Mila Kunis is so hot.

Here's the Red Band Trailer.

The husband saw this on the 4th and dragged me to it today.  I enjoyed it quite a bit, actually, although those damn Boston accents started getting way more noticeable to me after a while.

Brent Bozell: That Terrible 'Ted' Movie

Quote
Seth MacFarlane, whose $100 million contract with Fox makes him the highest paid TV writer in history, is now trying to take over the cineplex, with the same old shtick. You could pluck his oeuvre out of the summer movie-preview articles without any difficulty. His was the one where "the teddy bear comes to life and becomes a profane slacker who practically lives inside a bong and hires hookers in groups."

The movie's title is "Ted." It won its opening weekend with a $54 million gross at the box office. Clearly, MacFarlane's fans cannot consume enough of his pop-culture sewage.

"Ted" is a fitting metaphor for MacFarlane himself. He is the magical creation everyone in Hollywood seems to find as cute as a furry stuffed animal. He's made his fortune by putting the crudest, most offensive utterances in the mouths of babies, dogs and completely idiotic man-children. Hollywood is never having to grow up.

So the idea that this movie would center on a real man-boy named John Bennett who must grow up seems odd. Why grow up? Perpetual adolescence clearly has worked for some people. Here again, MacFarlane is Ted, holding back the real slackers by keeping them in a state of mental pimple-popping for his own personal gain.

This is the plot: As a boy, Bennett has no friends, so on Christmas night he wishes on a shooting star that his teddy bear could really talk to him and be his best friend — and then it happens. But it's supposedly much funnier when the movie fast forwards 27 years, and Bennett and his teddy bear are pot-smoking losers who watch too much television.

Now as one of Hollywood's most vicious atheists, it would seem like quite a sellout for MacFarlane to make a movie with a "magic wishes" plot centering on Christmas night, no less. This movie pounds away with the usual and very tired Whack-a-Mole jokes about sex, drugs and bodily functions, presumably because it can't really plot its way out of a paper bag. Even the wish-upon-a-star thing is as old as "Pinocchio."

Yeah, I heard that this movie did $54 million at the box office and my first thought was "HOW?" then "WHY GOD WHY?"

Because it is completely predictable. People hate change and thinking. They know going to see anything Seth conjures up in that fourth level of hell is going to be just like everything else. Anyone going into this movie expecting different or even having somewhat of a plot deserves their disappointment.

Always kinda viewed comedy films as being weak on plot with the intention of delivering the main draw of the humorous set pieces and scenarios. Like Family Guy?

You'd be correct.   Also, one of the trolls in the comments is hilarious as the reviewer is Catholic so the reply is written by what I can only assume to be a Baptist. (Since it brings up baptism several times)

As for why it did well.. it's a big-budget comedy. We expect them to be formulaic, disgusting and utterly predictable.  It's not a goddamn art-house film, folks.  It's 2012's Step Brothers, Hangover or Animal House.  All pretty plebeian films but still damn funny.

I want to see it. I just don't like going to the theatre for comedies.

I also think its funny that people like to take shots at Seth MacFarlane because he understands what's low-brow random funny. He's also a master of comedic dialogue timing.

Also, as a side note, I find other Christians who get offended by television shows and movies to be some of the most annoying people on the planet. These people aren't offended enough by hunger, suffering of others in their own cities, or outrageous poverty to get off their asses and do something, but they have plenty of time to write letters to FOX declaring how they will boycott their sponsors over a TV show.

Talked to a couple of different friends who've seen this.  They all loved it and say it was hysterical.  May have to go see it myself.

I'm not a huge fan of Family guy and they shouldn't of cancelled King of the Hill for the Cleveland Show.  However, I do love me some American Dad.

I take shots at Seth McFarlane because he's somehow making 3 shows with the same running jokes and getting paid for doing it. Family Guy hasn't been interesting for like 3 or 4 seasons (and some say it wasn't before then either, but it was at least funny if unoriginal). Most of the time when I see new Family Guy, I feel like I've heard all these jokes before. I still can't figure out WTF is supposed to be funny about American Dad.

You are trying too hard. American Dad is funny because Roger is ridiculously anti-social, and Stan is a giant douche. The only characters that aren't funny on that show are the fish (which with they make fun of all the time), and Francine (because Seth can't actually write a funny female character)

I'm convinced Seth can't write a funny female because he loathes them all and just doesn't realize it.  All his stuff has a distinctly misogynistic bent to it.   I'm almost convinced he's closeted and hasn't realized it.

I'm pretty certain that Seth doesn't do any writing on his shows anymore, anyway.

Not that it changes any of the overall points, of course.

American Dad is indeed awful.

Family Guy has its moments, some of the bits are good (like the Star Wars parody) but it, unlike the Simpsons or other comedy stuff, is so unoriginal.

And McFarlane already is kind of pariah in cartoonist circles:

‘Ted’ť Creator Seth MacFarlane Accused of Ripping Off A Cartoonist… Again

Quote
Amid the rise and success of hit TV shows such as “Family Guy” and “American Dad,” animator-turned Hollywood powerhouse Seth MacFarlane has been dogged with accusations of joke-stealing and lack of originality in his work.

Now, cartoonists are pointing out the similarities between his new motion picture “Ted” and popular comic strip “Imagine This.” The strip, created in 2008 by cartoonist Lucas Turnbloom and syndicated by Universal Uclick, centers around a slacker and his foul-mouthed teddy bear sidekick who drinks beer and has anger issues.

“Certainly, the idea of someone talking to a stuffed animal isn’t new,” said Tom Racine, host of Tall Tale Radio, a popular podcast about comics, animation, and movies. “But ‘Ted’ feels like it was just taken directly from ‘Imagine This’ with little or no attempt to change it.”

Racine created a shot-by-shot graphic pairing panels from “Imagine This” and screenshots from “Ted.” In one, both Ted and Turnbloom’s bear character Clovis are leaning back while drinking a beer. In another, both sets of characters sit lazily on the couch eating cereal.

I liked it for the first two seasons or so.  Then it just started getting really strange and odd without really going anywhere (kind of like Family Guy!).  Almost like he was going to put a good deal of effort into the show at first, but then he got Family Guy back so now it's kind of in "well I get paid for it, might as well see what off the wall shit story lines I can throw at audiences and still get paid for it!" mode.

I still record the shows and watch them, but usually 3-4 months after they air while I'm doing something else and just happen to have the TV on.  I haven't honestly seen very many episodes of his shows in the last 2 seasons that they've been on that made me feel glad I caught them.

Looking at the strip, I have no idea McFarlane stole the idea.  The cartoonist might sue and get a few hundred grand to go away - and he should take it.  Hollywood isn't about ideas, it is about who can get the movie actually made.

Family guy, I have a soft spot for. I know it's terrible, but I love it anyway.
Ted looks like rehashed McFarlane. I don't even watch the Cleveland show because between Family Guy and the odd epsiode of American Dad, I get all the McFarlane humor I care for.
