So, Everyone in my house is playing (except the baby twins : ) I have minor concerns about my 7 and 8 year old sons, but my 10 year old daughter is good I'd say. Basically, I make them play without sound and they are quite mature kids (they have grown up quick in the last 6 months!)
In a neat twist, everyone plays a unique class...
Daughter rocking the wizard, sons playing barb and WD, me playing a Monk and my fiancee playing a DH (and she is NOT a PC gamer). For me, I have my own crew of gold farmers! I think I might equip them all with gold find magic items to really make it stupid! I actually give them crap if I see them leave a blue behind!
The stash is awesome, people swapping out their gear pretty regularly, and once in a while I buy them some cheap AH rare as a 'gift'. Even though they earned it ;) I told them when they hit 15 I will buy them some sweet stuff! (and spend maybe 1/5 of what they have farmed for me). The game is great that I can overgear them to try to help for some of their playing shortcomings (I constantly tell them to put their left hand on the keyboard, they seem to always want to jus tuse left and right mouse).
So far so good, and maybe this is me justifying but it just doesn't seem that dark.

Couldn't find any gif showing the torture rack in action (you activate it by shooting it) but I think diablo 3 is pretty grim at times.

I dunno. Kids these days....they aren't like we are/were in a lot of ways. I don't know if it is accurate to say they are desensitized, but maybe that's it. Our parents tried to keep some of this sort of thing away from us. For this generation, OTOH, the parents are fully engaged in the same activities. The violence just doesn't mean anything to them, and I think they probably find the blood and guts more funny than scary. I haven't seen any evidence that this transfers into a sociopathic disregard for all living creatures.
I don't (yet?) let my kids play D3, but they play other games that are little else than going around murdering everything in sight. I could see my 10 year-playing this. And if he plays it, the 7 year-old would be right behind him.

It's less the murder (since all the dudes you murder are EVUL) and more the whole extensive bloody torture compound, you know? I can't quite explain it, but I don't think I'd be cool with letting Generic Ten Year Old Child scamper through it. But I don't have kids, will never have kids, and so my opinion means jack shit anyway.

I don't believe I've been through that level yet, so I don't know.
You're probably right, but even still...I will admit that such a thing would probably have bothered me quite a bit as a kid. My kids? I kinda doubt it somehow.

I gamed as a younger kid, having a brother three years older than me. I remember a police quest that had some bloody pentagrams and stuff in them, that's about as gory as it got back then from my recollection.
They don't really seem to stop and take in the sights. There are more bad guys to hunt somewhere!!!

My kid got Skylanders for her 7th bday, so we've been slogging through that. I'd like to pretend its getting her ready for Diablo.

There is worse in any 9pm time slot on cable.

There is worse in any 9pm time slot on cable. That's not the question. The question is are you letting your kids watch 9pm cable? All kids vary, you know them best. I just find it amusing this is the same forum that raked me over the coals at the very idea of letting my 8-year-old watch something distasteful. I think it was Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.

Eh, my 11-year old plays Skyrim (I've banned a few quests and no reading of certain books) so I'm ok with her playing this too. She's pretty good at not watching or playing something that bothers her.

Was going through the end of Act 3 with a couple of friends last night and we were taking the time to look at the scenery, in particular the giant writhing creatures chained up around the lower levels of the Arreat Crater/Hearts of Sin zones. We're all in our 40s and we were disturbed by them. Hieronymus Bosch meets H.R.Giger. Horrible nightmare material!
However we also, after discussing it for a while, came to the conclusion that it was very clearly cartoon horror. Kids are perfectly capable of distinguishing between reality and fantasy and have been doing so for a long, long time. Grimm's Fairy Tales, Tom & Jerry, etc. Kids are gonna have nightmares about something and I suppose being able to say "they're only stories" is better than if, for instance, your kids are having nightmares about nuclear war like I did in the 80s.

I'm still on Act 1. I wouldn't have too much issue with my 8 year old playing the early parts. But I think the torture chamber levels get to be little too much.

I recall changing the color of blood to green to play (I think it was) Diablo2 (or maybe Doom) when my kids were little and might see the screen.
Demonic imagery doesn't bother my kids. We're not a religious family so it doesn't mean much to them.
I kinda doubt that a 10 year old would pick up on the torture wheel for what it really represents. I think they would just see something to click on that gives loot, frankly.
At any rate, at 13 and 16 I'm not worried about my kids. I never understood the M rating for D2, either, and let them play that when they were younger.
I'm sure letting them play Saints Row is worse for them anyway (bad mom! bad mom!).
