Relic have announced details of the DoW expansion, 'Winter Assault'.
It adds the imperial guard as a playable faction.
No, not Tyranids, or Tau, or Necrons or any other interesting races, instead they are giving you acces to a whole army of the little wimpy humans you occaisionally got to ally with in the DoW campaign. But not until Q4 05.
At this point you may commence sharing your view that they should have just translated the turn based Warhammer 40k rules godammit.

Double WHAT THE FUCK?
Now, I like Imperial Guard and all, but that's not an expansion; that's just wimpier versions of the Space Marines/Eldar with more vehicles. That's insane. I imagine mod groups are able to put together well-done IG mods in less time than it takes Relic to put this expansion out.

One new army is fine. Provided they give the 3 in the main game that didn't have a solo campaign a solo campaign. Im not asking for much. Even 8 missions per faction is all I ask.
But this is too much for Games Workshop to do. For some reason they think their complete lack of actual advertising and word of mouth strategy is going to get the average geek to pay 30 dollars for 10 unpainted and unassembled Space Marines when said geek needs at least 30 of them plus a couple 35 dollar on average tanks/special units to play the smallest normal sized game. The thought of a fully featured electronic game that plays like the tabletop game is anathema to them. Even though they would probably make more money from said hypothetical game than they would from their miniatures game. Moreso if you count that some people would jump over to the tabletop game and an online component would cover almost their entire R&D hassles for years to come. The game would actually get playtested, and people would PAY for the opportunity.
I mean, using the actual tabletop rules sure as hell didn't hurt D&D, and it was moderately successful for Battletech too. Heck, it probably did more for those two games than anything else.

Wau, talk about milking that cash cow. Instead of actually adding a new race (which is not humanoids-with-guns) they decide to recycle all of their artwork and release Impereal Guard *gak*
The only that will make this tolerable, is the hopeful whinefest that will occur in their forums. WCG2005 my arse.

They claim to be using all new artwork for the IG, recycling absolutely nothing. I still think it's the worst possible expansion they could do, army-wise. Tyranids would have been a much better choice.

Pretty much everything but Necrons would have been amazing there. Necrons...well if they wanted to keep it in line with the 40k ruleset would just have to be better than the other races. But yea Inferior Guard? what the fuck.

Don't forget a viable IG army has to add a shitton of vehicle units (chimera, basilisk, gryphon, leman russ + varients, hellhound, perhaps a shadowsword hehe ok got carried away).
Also people are saying 'nids, that would be like adding the necrons they would have to actually really think hard about how to do it. Oh and Tau do not a new race make, battle suits would be swell but they are still humanoids w/ guns.
I didn't even pick up DoW because as stated by others earlier in the thread. I wish people would stop making rts TA -from cavedog, not the shitty medieval one- was as good as the genre was going to get and in retrospect it wasn't that good.

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation. -William Gibson

Hmmm... so if they are not going to recycle, maybe they mean like, it will be a whole new IG regiment? Like the Catachans or something.
The idea behind adding Tyranids was that it gives the game a completely new perspective and turns the regular gameplay on it's head (or at least it should, in theory). I don't know much about the Necrons (quit before they were released), but i had spent a whole bunch of time playing against Tyranids and to me they always seemed like the toughest opponents.

p.s. Oh hey, does anyone know anything about the new Settlers game? 5/Legacy of Kings or something? It looked really nice and since it's on the 'coming soon' shelves here in Aus. i figured it should be out in the US already?

There are screenshots. IG look exactly the same as they did in the campaign except they now seem to hang out in groups of nine, and are slightly larger (basically the same size as space marines). And they have really big tanks. With a Q4 release, and my observations only being based on screenshots, this could all change ofc.
