I guess my issues is, I'd rather NOT have specific things to do unless those things are actually interesting. I don't like busy work, which is what the WoW quests felt like.

If I have to run around and kill a bunch of stuff, I might as well be able to choose when and where to do it.

Might as well do it for 8 hours at a time in the same spot so you might just hear that magical chime assuring you that you're life isn't a complete waste.  Really, back and forth, this conversation will go nowhere.  It's like argueing console v. pc or linux v. windows, the camps seem pretty polarized, except for Geldon who hasn't yet joined the vertibrate family.

And if you truly, truly want a feel for how the races are, don't play with a UI mod that makes the quest text zip by. You can actually get more of the whole story if you stop to read some of the quests instead of insta hitting accept and then loading it up to see what you need to collect/kill/rescure/escort/bbq/whatever.

First time through, yes. Second time through, hell no. I nearly went batty watching quest text crawl onto my log when I already knew what was being said. Thank god for the speed mods. Also makes sharing a breeze.

Oddly enough, what turned me off of FFXI was a buddy of mine explaining what a great time he'd had last time he logged in. He had to use every ounce of his class powers and exploit the minutiae of interactions between his subjob and mainjob to snatch victory from the edge of defeat! (Dragoon/White Mage, if it matters)

But of course I'm telling it to you in reverse, so here's the set up - he was whacking a monster half his level for cash and accidentally hit an AOE power and aggroed two more.

Sorry, but I'd rather feel like this (caution, large) when I'm playing a game.

To each his own.

Hah, it always did feel just wrong for my Warrior/Monk to be unable to take on creatures my own level by myself. I enjoyed the lower level game a lot more when it was still possible to solo.

I refuse to "camp"...it, quite literally, puts me to sleep.

Indeed. Being new to MMORPGs the whole camping dynamic was very strange to me. So, ... we just sit here in one spot, and someone brings us the monsters? And we do this ... for hours at a time? Eh ... ok. Combine this with the hour or more it took just to find the group and you end up with a very passive gaming experience. Something like WoW or CoH just feels so much better with its more active combat, as in actively moving through/around an environment as you would in any normal game.

I just felt that FFXI's "world" was just unneccessarily large and barren. That damn beach with the snips comes to mind.
I guess our varying opinions aren't too surprising.  This is totally a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" distinction, at best.

Also, last I checked (Yes, I could be wrong), FFXI was Square-Enix's first foray into the realm of the PC, and also their first true MMOG or RPG. Yes, I am excluding all their console "RPG's". They're just adventure games to me if I'm dragged along a rail andI have no actual role in the outcome of the game.
Under that qualification, the only MMORPG that should be any good is EQ2.   Judging by the success of both World of Warcraft and FFXI, my current belief is that skill making other games does directly translate over to making a good MMOG.

Ok, my fault. That was more a stab at the whole Console vs PC RPG thing (IE: FF vs Anything by Bioware/BIS).

Actually FFXI is a PS2 game first and foremost. Not in the US, but that's how it started life and it runs great on a PS2.

Which, when you think about it, is pretty fucking incredible! It has some of the nicest PC MMORPG graphics around, yes was made for a system that pales in comparison to high-end PCs.

It also blows the whole "wah, programming for a PC is hard!" excuse out of the water. If you think programming for a PC is hard, try programming for a PC and a PS2, and a new PS2 hard drive to boot. (Which has it's own problems) Yet FFXI has very few bugs. Just another reason to not believe people when they cry about compatibility issues.

Some of what they can do is limited by the PS2, like the number of textures and that sort of thing I would imagine. The fact that it even holds water with a PC MMORPG is pretty damn incredible.

Thirded. Although it was actually his post that made me think WTF because I didn't notice the name at first. But he said FFXI was higher than WoW and I wondered how the fuck that could be. Then I looked over to see it was Geldon. Then looked at the timestamp.

I was scheduled to sit in on an interview for a position we need filled (I used to do it, and wrote most of the training manuals for it, and will likely get stuck training the latest chimp to do it). As a responsible potential employer, I read her resume before the interview. Her email address:

sunshineandrainbowsforever@*insertnameoffreeemailservicehere*.com

This is on her RESUME. WTF?

Her interview was scheduled 4-5 on Friday afternoon (thanks for nothing, HR department). I stayed late just to attend. And the bitch never showed. No call, nothing.

Were I in charge of choosing potential candidates, an email address like that would get you stuck in the rejected pile immediately. You can get any number of free email addresses if you either aren't bright enough to get one through your ISP, or don't actually have Internet access at home. Find one with some combination of your initials/name and use THAT for your professional contacts, mmkay?

Depends on the job. I wouldn't have any problems hiring a secretary or cute perky PR chick (CPPC) with a unicornsinmyheart@hotmail.com email address. Actually my company just started hiring in Amsterdam, where it's legal to ask for a full body photograph to accompany the CV.

Yeah. Good times.
