I cannot recommend this highly enough. I didn't think the 3-D was an extraordinary addition to the film on the whole but at least it has something to do with the theme of the film. Whether or not you read the Invention of Hugo Cabret, this is totally worth seeing. Basically it's Scorcese's love poem to films as a whole, including oddly enough for Scorcese to special effects. Will make a great double bill someday with Cinema Paradiso.
