Anyone have any experience with the (a) DAoC emu shard? This seems the biggest: http://www.dolserver.net/Anyone here have any desire to plug through one in anticipation of new shineh later this year?

I'd give it a go if we were able to come up with a regular group.

I might give it another shot as well. I do worry that it will kill any nostalgia that I had.
Finding 8 people that play regularly might be the limiting factor. Without a regular 8, this game gets old fast. A stealth duo could have potential though.

I might be game if you could pop a 50 with full RR...
Dunno though, for some reason EQ holds its nostalgia for me much better than DAOC. Probably just because I was younger during EQ days.

I always loved the RR grind. There was something satisfying about killing people at rank 1 or getting RR5 in a weekend. Then again, I almost always rerolled a toon as soon as I hit rank 9.

More like 1 ranting post, and 3 pages of interrupted post attempts because someone posted after you.

I think I will look into this. I'd only be interested in the RR, but who knows what that might like on an EMU.
Edit: Uthgard.net seems to be the way

daoc emu shards make me cry Oh come now...you should take it as a sign of tribute! To know that there are people out there that would spend their hard earned time and money to replicate your work and keep it afloat shows that your project meant something. I don't see too many AC2 emu servers around, do you?

I might consider it if I didn't have to go through the goddamn level grind. Last time I tried DAoC, I quit at 32 and that was when they started adding free level XP and XP in PVP. I couldn't get in battleground PVP because level 30 battlegrounds were barren and the leveling was SO SLOW. The level 20 battlegrounds was fucking awesome though, when just about everyone could make a free level 20.

Tried one of the emu-server, rolled a character, logged in, killed a few bear cubs, played for half an hour without leveling a single time, most of the time spend fighting the UI.
Uninstalled after that.
I finally realized we DID come a long way from games like DaoC to WoW-Today(tm). We are not moving fast and we might not be heading in the right direction, but we sure did come a long way.

I am very confident that my nostalgia is a veritable sleeping dog and I intend to let it lie.

If they brought DAoC up to a modern-day graphic engine with a more robust/customizable UI and not change anything else, I would seriously play again. I just can't bring myself to deal with such a command-line driven game anymore.
Much love, all you Mythic lurkers...you got me hooked into this MMO craze. I await your sunset announcement for 2012.

If they basically remade the entire game using proper mechanics and a proper engine and actually balanced the fucker worth a damn and 'did it right', yea I totally play that magical unicorn game too.

Yeah yeah, muck it up Seriously though...so many different and unique class mechanics. Would love to see them brought into some of the current gen games.

What are you smoking? Different and unique? I could understand that if you were describing RVR, but the classes?

I was the guy with the thunder hammer for years. It may have been a unique graphic, but it certainly wasn't a unique mechanic.
Look, I will not confirm or deny the existence of a DAOC 2.0 design doc on my hard drive, but it's a pipe dream. The people who own the IP will never do anything good with it again.

As someone who's tooled around on Uthgard a scant few months ago, I should warn you that unless they've done some major, major updates lately, it's kinda janky. A bunch of classes didn't work at all (if it was released in SI, chances are it doesn't work), many many quests do not work, and it uses the most up-to-date realm abilities instead of the classic ones, which creates some... interesting consequences in RvR. It also features a very hyper min/max RvR community where hybrids need not apply; I regularly saw Thanes and Friars excluded from any and all organized RvR bar some lower-level battleground stuff. Also Hibernia players are a bunch of absolute cocks there.

Sounds exactly the same as when I was playing. I wonder if theurgists and sorcerers work according to new rules or the SI rules.

Eh, rather than go necro-diving through the archives, I'll just rez this instead... The three people still working on DAoC for the 50 people still playing (can't see how many people are playing live anymore...which makes me sad), just put out a dev dairy on improving the New User Experience, along with the 5600 word patch 1.110 notes. Maybe they're gearing up for some new offense to bring back players? http://darkageofcamelot.com/article/918http://darkageofcamelot.com/article/921Ninja-edit: In reading the patch notes, after 109 major patch revisions over 10 years, they're adding mouse-over tooltips to spells and abilities, and quick-access info for items and such via simply right-clicking.

The latest producer's letter in June was pretty much all about improving the new player experience as well and that was nearly four months ago; if they're making a big push for anything it's been pretty feeble so far. They also announced plans to create a wiki and touted the creation of a new website because for a few months the game didn't have one, as I recall.

Again, it's just three guys keeping this boat alive now...gotta have priorities Maybe after TOR launches they'll start up an Origin-Pass, where for a flat fee one can play TOR, DAoC, WAR and Ultima Online as much as they want, thus the push for updating the newbie content

I tried the EMU and DAOC prime. I'm afraid the UI and gameplay was -- to use a Schildism -- like internet face stabbing knives. Holy. Shit.

Hey hey HEY! Respect your elders...that used to be cutting edge shit right there! If you hated that, I'd steer clear of EQ1, UO and AC1...
